Make sure to see the One Chord Song topic in this part of the forum.

It reminded me of various challenges that fellow songwriters have suggested in songwriting challenges I participated in. These usually take one of a few forms, usually involving something more complex that what might be typical. Now and then the opposite type of suggestion is put forth. Put restrictions on your writing. One I took on was to use the minimum number of notes to suggest chords. Two notes at a time.

When I heard that challenge I had recently listened to a podcast on “taps” which was originally used to signal the end of the day to troops in military camps to extinguish their lanterns.

I had also found out about the NASA audio recording archive.

All three rattled around in my head as separate inspirations of things to use and see if they might inspire creativity.

This was the result of the commingling of the three ideas.

Note: I used delay and reverb while recording to advantage. The piano roll is truly just 2 notes at once.

What self imposed limitations have you used to perhaps get you out of a songwriting rut?

Edit:

I realized that I posted the link to my final version which I added a piano track to that doubles some of the notes with a repeated strike of the notes. So where you hear piano in here, the piano roll would show three notes at a time but still just two notes of a chord.
