First of all, thank you to PG Music for staffing their online chat help on a Sunday morning.
I had a basic 12 bar bass line playing one note per beat at a very fast tempo of 180bpm (the Doors song LA Woman) is about the tempo I used for my song. I wanted each bass note to be STACCATO. Using the right-click menu access, I found the notation symbols and saw that the PERIOD is for the STACCATO notation. But using this method, I would have to update each note. So that meant 48 times. There had to be a better way.
I contacted the online chat. The answer was to enter your chord like this if for example, you have a bar where you are soloing the bass and want it STACCATO

The DOUBLE-COMMA is the key. The double comma will make the note play STACCATO. I do not see this mentioned anywhere in the written documentation or online videos.
Is there any document that shows ALL of these chord entry tricks in a single format? I would also point out though that when you use this chord entry technique for STACCATO, it does not come out on the sheet music. There are no dots. So either I am still doing something not quite right, or the design is just no too good.[/i][/u][i][u] The chord sheet shows staccato but the resulting sheet music does not.
And I still don't know how to make the STACCATO apply only to the bass and not all the instruments when I unmute them. I guess that is my main complaint about Band In A Box. It is so complex. Finding out how to do a specific thing, such as STACCATO on one instrument and not the others, takes so much time, there is little time left to actually make music. [i][/i][u][/u]

Working these past few weeks with the new features in the 2022 release has reinforced my basic understanding of what BIAB actually is for me as a musician: I can make each of the musicians in my 'band' play exactly what notes I want them to play, and do so exactly when and how I want. This software is so feature-rich that today there are multiple techniques I can employ to actually make - any part of - the music. Wanting to make the bass player play four specific notes in one bar from the Doobie Brothers tune I'm working on, I logged four hours of reading the manual, checking the forums, and trying different things out until I found the best approach for me (Playable Real Tracks and editing the piano roll). Was that too much time? I don't think so, because I learned what to do and the next time I do it it will take seconds instead. For me, to make an instrument play notes at a bar where the other instruments don't (rests, shots and holds), I look first to the chord settings dialog and the new micro chording features. You'll find documentation about those commas as part of the micro chording features. After that, if I can't make it happen with shots, holds, and rests, plan b in my workflow is to either play it myself (with a midi keyboard), or edit the real track or midi track notes manually. I suspect that you should enter D..,D.. D..,D.. and specify the double periods followed by a comma for the first beat, instead of the double commas.

And if you want just the bass to play staccato, one way is to freeze all the other instruments and then change the chords to what VideoTrack showed. Or, copy all but the bass track to Utility tracks, mute all the original tracks except the bass, then change the chords as shown to get the bass to play staccato.
