Hello anja,
To select MIDI drivers, go to the Opt. menu and click on 'MIDI/Audio Driver Setup'. You should see your MIDI interface listed as a MIDI Output Driver. Select that and make sure "Use VST/DXi synth" is unchecked - that is, if you want Band-in-a-Box to play through an external MIDI synthesizer that you have connected to your interface.
If you don't have an external synthesizer, you will probably want to set Band-in-a-Box to use a DXi software synth. To do this, check the 'User VST/DXi synth' box, which will open the DirectX Window. Select either the VSC-DXi, or CoyoteWT.
If you're still having trouble, please give us some more details about your setup - what MIDI output drivers you have, your sound card, interface, etc. And also, your version/build of Band-in-a-Box.
