A large number of users requested this and argued successfully that it would be more sensible to beginners. A few of us requested that this be made a setting so that, if we preferred the old default or any other setting, we could do that. And we got it. Everybody wins. I suspect this, unlike the 255 bar limit, was an easy change to implement.

256 bars seems a lot, but from a linear perspective, having a limit of 256 bars means that you only have 4 chorus for a 64 bars long jazz standard like, say, "Alice in Wonderland". Melody, solo, solo, and melody. That's all.

I'm sure you know this, but while it is an annoyance and perhaps one of the oldest requests, there is no such limit in RealBand. And of course no such limit if you take your song into a DAW.
