When did it happen that I can export BIAB files directly to mp3? I had the habit, established long ago, of exporting to wav and then opening it in Audacity and (usually tweeking it a bit) and then exporting to mp3 from there!

No I don't know David. I moved here a little over a year ago to be close to my grandkids. I know very few folks, here, since my wife and I have followed Covid protocols and haven't socialized much.

For a while, the option was there, but you had to download or purchase some kind of codex or app or whatever, and I just got in the habit of going to wav and opening it in Audacity.

BIAB could render to MP3 for some years now. Some folks have problems if they do not have a codec for it installed, but it's been there.
MikeK shows a screen where the bit-rate is 24. I think that change is more recent, a year or two. Not sure.
Note that those of us who use hardware MIDI synths can't do this anyway, because we must redirect the output of MIDI to record to stereo in real time. It's one more trade-off.

When I've asked PGMusic the response was that we now use Microsoft Media Foundation so it's kind of a circle of questions. I can say about 'when' it happened, but still not sure how.
On my system my windows codec list shows LAME MP3, but do not know if/how windows is using it. What bitrate does your MP3 get encoded to? (I get 320kBps) Curious, do you have LAME installed? (Since you previously used Audacity) Maybe Windows now 'sees' it .. so BiaB can use it
