actually, instead of adding chords like Am add2 in the next updates, would it not be better to have an option that allows the user to define his own chords and even in the voicing he chooses ,and then assigning a shortcut to the new chord? For example, the user defines Am add2 in the following note order, starting from the bottom note, A :

B
C
E
A

then he would just assign a new shortcut.

allowing customization and user definition of chords, would be simpler than trying to add every single chord over the course of years. There will probably be always some chord that are not found in BB.....doing the above would just leave carte blanche to the user, a far simpler solution, I think

I've already commented on this idea elsewhere.? It could work for MIDI, I think, but not RealTracks. Plus, you would generate songs that are unique to the BIAB installation that created them, in which you defined that particular chord.

Yes this was mentioned in connection with the extra chords I asked for in another thread recently. For anyone into arranging and using the sonority of chords as well as/or in preference to their 'functionality', the ability to define voicings is an indispensible tool.

i think that up to now PG has taken the line that voicings are a 'style' based thing and therefore something that can be catered for by adding the necessary style to the database if enough people want it.

Yet if you want to do anything innovative or different in today's post-everything meltdown of genre-based music, its necessary to think beyond the historical customs of how you play and conceive of a given style. This is true if you're a composer who isn't contrained by issues of 'authenticity' and 're-creation' of what has gone before. Being able to customise styles in many different ways is how the program-makers should be thinking if BIAB to be a modern 'arrangers' medium as well as a mostly 're-creative/players' medium as it is now.

As far as currently supported chords go, its worth noting that although BIAB says it supports all the chords in the list, it has a hard job outputting 13ths on a consistent basis in many styles.

Unless the chord resides on a single macro note where you'll get the 13th but often at the expense of another chord member, the actual occurance of the 13th will depend on the voicing in the pattern.

Some styles are clearly set up for that but by no means as many as you'd think.

Alan

excellent, Alan. You have expressed my same exact thoughts. I 'd also add that a composer has to be able to write in many styles, and harmony approaches change a lot with the many styles of music, therefore it would be nice to have all these options. And instead of updating BB with a new chord and satisfy all these variables, it would be better to allow the user to just define his own, then we would have the option to both use BB as it is now, as well as going as far as you want with chord definition. Even playing more advanced things like 10-tone clusters....why not?
It's not what I do (at least not for a few years yet! ) but it would be nice to know that there is no harmony limitations on BB other than one's knowledge and intentions.

well, that's fine..... I still see BB as a MIDI program, so to speak. What I mean is that I see it like a world where I can look into. Nothing wrong with that... for example, often I spend hours listening and examining songs taken from the BB midi library. There's great stuff there, right now I am really digging the Soundtrack Fakebook, I'll probably buy Volume 2 , too. I just learn a lot with midi.

The Realtracks to me are just a great option, that's all, but there are certain things that can be done only with MIDI, especially in the writing and composing department....we all know it's peculiar advantages, for example you can compose a difficult part but not be able to play it because, say, you compose a lot but your performing chops are not so hot. Just slow the tempo ( by a lot ) and press 'record' and voila', you devised your creation nonetheless. This could never be done with Realtracks, but still the Realtracks offer their own evident advantages. Well I am sure I am not telling you any new things to you guys. My point is: why having just one thing or another? Let's just be complete, and have MIDI, Realtracks, and the ability to define your chords. Let's have the whole lot, then we will all be happy

BB rocks

Guys, nobody's heard of the Stylemaker around here?? Why does everything have to be provided by PG Music? You can buy a whole set of Craftsman tools for a couple grand but they're not going to build your garage for you. You want to hear what someone can do with the Stylemaker, check out Norton Music. You want that 13th everytime then jump into the Stylemaker, that's why it's part of the program.

Yep, I use the Stylemaker all the time. We're talking here about what it's not yet capable of. (i.e. Global changes to voicings that don't depend on you having to enter new notes on each pattern..something thats been possible in midi for a long time)

You ever heard of the wishlist? You want a new feature then jump into wishlist, thats why it's part of the forum!
