Bob, I have the "paid for" version of Synthfont (which includes the VST, along with the stand-alone and some other tools). Below are the steps I take to change soundfonts from the interface. If you change the default soundfont, all channels use that particular soundfont (so the sounds automatically change with a multi-timbral soundfont), but you can also select individual soundfonts for specific channels. Anyway, I hope this helps. I don't know if your problem is because it isn't registered, but it definitely works to change soundfonts. I just changed mine from the Reality Soundfont to the Timbres of Heave Soundfont.
