Many years ago, a guy convinced our band to back his brother, a singer who just came back from Las Vegas and needed to get back, offering us big money.
We were doing one-nighters and figured when winter comes and the gigs down here were slow, it might be a good idea. Being young at the time, we didn't know we were supposed to get paid for rehearsals.
The singer was very good, and good-looking.
We eventually found out the reason why he wasn't in Vegas anymore was he was a first class divo (male diva).
He would make mistakes, like skipping the rests at the end of a phrase (3.5 bar phrase, anyone) and we'd try to help him, but he would throw a tantrum and stomp off. His brother would try to smooth things over.
We did 3 rehearsals, should have walked after the first one, but the brother/manager was a smooth talker and convinced us we would make big money if we could get past the rough spots.
I don't know if the guy ever got back to Vegas as we never hear from him again.
Lesson learned.

It's funny how the Time Won't Let Me Wikipedia article downplays the horns but I've always thought the horns are what attracted me to the recording in the first place. I mean there is nothing real sophisticated about the riffs but the trumpet player is really screaming on the last note.

Jim I think it's because they weren't really "members". That lineup was very fluid for the whole life of the band. People came and went, the military called for a few of them, Al got killed... The original drummer, Jimmy Fox, was just sensational. Amazing right hand. He played such rhythm on the high hat, locked in with the guitar player strumming, and such solid kick, locked in with the bass player. That's why he was the perfect drummer for The James Gang. Before, during and after the Joe Walsh years. The guy who replaced him, Ricky Biagello (who played as Baker) was very good too but not Jimmy.
The Outsiders currently have a "replacement players" version doing some gigs but it's not really interesting to me so I've never seen them. Ricky on drums and some guys named Joe.

I've been in a few hired horn sections myself. Usually going to a recording studio after the rhythm track and either a temporary vocal or the final vocal track is finished.
Stick a chart in front of us, tune up, do some volume tests and go. It doesn't pay well in this area, but it's an easy few bucks for an hour's work.
When we were being courted by Motown, many, many years ago, the horn and string players that did the sessions were often from the Detroit Symphony.
And I agree with Jim Fogle, the horns are an essential part of the song, and even the slight intentional or unintentional intonation discrepancies add to the part.
I say intentional because sometimes when playing a part, I'll play it a little sharp if my line is on top to add just a little edge to the ensemble.

Except for long ago, all of the bands I have played in have been Church worship bands. These have their own sets of “that guy”.
1. Keyboard player is used to being the whole band and has a really strong left hand and can’t stay out of the way of the bass player. Doesn’t know how to play with right hand only (which also means they have no idea how to play with joystick or pitch/mod wheels. Also, changing presets on the keyboard is a scary thing so you get one sound for the whole set!
2. Guitar players use barre chords for everything (that was me 25 years ago). Causing similar problems to #1 on the low end of things
3. No music director that knows how to run a band in general
4. Full horn sections (4 trumpets, 2 trombones, two sax) with an electric drum kit , in a room that seats 150-200. Everyone tries to play to be heard, and the all hands on deck just make it sound like a poorly executed Who concert!!! Problem: see #3 and #1.
5. 5 new songs every week. Not enough time to fully rehearse together and arrange for the room, etc.
You nailed that one. Oh the stories I could tell on this topic.... but for now.....just let's say #3 was the problem. Mostly.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.
