Edit> Copy Special> Copy/ Move Tracks ...>Audio (drop down menu) with 3 choices.

1.Do nothing
2.Copy to destination track
3.Move to destination track

But if you select a RealTrack to move to a Utility track (#3) you get a wav rendering.

I want to be able to move the RealTrack in current generation or frozen state.

Why?

I want to be able to continue to use RealTrack functions such as MultiRiff ... which you can't do on a wav file.

So what's wrong with just opening another instance of the same RealTrack from the Utility track?

Because the generation and MultiRiffing I've already worked on would be lost.

But I still don't get it ... what would be the point?

I want to explore different styles against the RealTrack I like and want to save. If I leave it frozen in slot 2, for an example, I won't get the intended rhythm instrument when I load up another style. If I don't freeze it, it will get nuked.

I might want to do a 'call and response' against another rhythm or lead/ solo track. It might work with editing the wav file rendered, but there might be a little section I don't like against the RealTrack from the new style which I'd like to MultiRiff edit.

That's why I want to be able to move a RealTrack as a RealTrack to a Utility track.

Thanks.

Your workflow is in a way similar to mine.

I would love to have simple "right click" Copy -> Paste on mixer track and copy exactly what is there -> to another track without going into any additional menus at all smile

A small modification to your workflow should fix all of the issues you've listed in your post, even if you started editing a RealTrack prior to deciding you want to explore that RealTrack with different styles and want to load and audition new styles without losing that RealTrack.

RealTracks generated on Utility Tracks respond to the Multiriff feature.

If you're planning to use the multiriff feature on a RealTrack residing on a Legacy Track (1-8), generate another instance of that RealTrack on a Utility Track and do the editing on that track. If you've already edited a Legacy Track and have bars that's received multiriff changes, those edits can by copied and pasted onto the RealTrack that's on the Utility Track so you won't lose any edits you've already made.

It should just copy the track section data and not create a wav file.
Same in the Audio Edit Generate menu this should just create the track section data and not a wav file.
In Reaper I have RealTrack section data, if I go to the Track menu, yes they have a Track menu, and select duplicate it will just duplicate the section data without creating a wav file, I can also copy just a section of a track and it will not create a wav file.

If I have a RT track that sounds just right but I forgot to use a Direct Input version to add the FX I like, so I want to change the frozen track to a Direct Input track I just change the RT section data path to the Direct Input folder. So this is playing the same sections but is DI:

Maybe it should, but it doesn't within BIAB. Try and see.

Yes, I understand "all tracks are equal" with respect to MultiRiffing a RT on a Utility track.

But please explain whence the RT MultiRiff edits are copied and then pasted to the other RT?

There is also one other issue that your help doesn't entirely address: regeneration. Regardless of MR edits, how do I know/ ensure that duplicate RT will have the same generated track unless each time before the initial playback I've already inserted it?

Don't you think it would be a lot simpler and time-efficient to have the 'Copy Special' menu do what it says, move the RT entirely in it's RT status and current iteration?

I agree it would be much simpler, and that is how I feel this should evolve, to be in line with basic operation concept. I think 99% of users who do not visit forum would agree with your statement above smile

DFT, I see you have joined recently, and I thank you for voicing your concern / wish! Utility Tracks had/are probably my main wish for BIAB. Some big changes to these were done since last year. But I sincerely hope that they will be developed further, having full features of legacy tracks. Simple Copying / Duplicating tracks in their state is a big piece of the puzzle that needs to be filled. There is a lot of creative potential in that, especially when we have 24(!) available tracks.

<< But please explain whence the RT MultiRiff edits are copied and then pasted to the other RT? >>

Assume your style has a RT3363 acoustic piano track
Generate a RT3363 acoustic Piano Track on Utility Track #1.
Open the Audio Editor and select the Legacy Track #2 Piano Track you created Multiriff edits. You'll see the WAV form for that track.
You can copy/paste between the two tracks.

That's correct. The two tracks will not be exactly alike except for the edits you made. If you want to retain the exact track, you'll need to either make a copy or freeze the track. If that's the case, you can make a note of the instrument a new style will place on that track and leave the edited track frozen and generate the other instrument on a Utility Track and obtain the same result.

If I copy the RealTrack from Util 2 to Util 1 it turns into audio wav,
if I copy the section data from Util 2 to Reaper it gives me the same sections at the same position without creating a wav:

Yes, I think that 99% of the users would expect exactly that. I find the fact that copying / moving a RT results in a wav file (artist track) kind of weird and counterintuitive.

So, +1

Yes, that would be great to keep internal homogeneity, reducing functional redundancy, and avoiding user confusion, as long as the "range" boxes are automatically filled with the appropriate data after clicking in "Select and Generate RT"
However, I guess this suggestion would be more effective if posted separately. smile

Ahh ha! So you're explaining that the 'wav form' of a RT displayed in the audio editor is an actual editable RT and not a wav.

Really appreciate. Since you're well on your way to 7000 posts and I'm only just beginning on this forum much, much respect. I see why Henry Clarke holds you in such high regard.

I don't understand? Isn't the track now copied to Reaper (or any DAW) now a wav file? Or are you meaning that when using the BIAB DAW plugin you still have access to still be able to edit the RT?

Thanks for the help, but in any case, this is not the use I'm concerned with. My purpose is to maintain a RT while auditioning different styles in BIAB ... before I take my arrangement to the DAW.

This is just to show that it doesn't need to create a wav it can play direct from the source files, this is what Reaper does and most DAWs these days, they use non destructive audio editing so it's not creating a lot of wav files. They are getting there, the 2022 release can now use data in the Util tracks rather than wav files.
When this is added to the BBPlugin it will be very quick with no wait time for generating and won't create wav files upon wav files. It will just play the track sections direct as Reaper is doing in the pic:

Just as a marginal observation, this is actually what happens when you copy / move a RT, no matter if you're copying to an utility track or not.

So, again, +1
