Hey Matt,
Do you happen to have charts to your songs? More specifically tracks 6 & 9? I really like the melodies and movements of all the songs on your project. But, these two jump out to my ears where I want to grasp what the guitarist is doing there. They do not need to be note for note; just a standard chord chart would do so I can read what he is doing and when. As we have talked in the past, I am studying jazz a little more than attentively than I had in the past. And South American flavored jazz, especially out of Brazil, is one I have really settled on.
In fact, if you are toying with some BIAB tunes with that flavor, I would love to invent some guitar parts for them. I am trying to write on my own. But, I am still lack the fluidity I hear when I hear artists like yourself in your music. Material like yours seems to flow from section to section. Whereas, in between my sections there are some bumpy roads and even some collisions! It just does not flow.
Thanks, RickeG

Thank you very kindly, RickG.
There are two guitarists on my CD: Romero Lubambo on acoustic guitar (he's about the best there is from Brazil) and Jeff Ciampa doing sweeteners on electric guitar. Both performed their parts from lead sheets.
I often write collisions, though there are not many on Brazilian Wish since I wrote those tunes to be great grooves on each song. Pianists are always telling me we can't go to this chord from that chord, and my reply is, yes, we can; let's stretch a little! They come around once they hear it.
The prevailing cost for sheet music is about $2 per chart. If you would like to do this, please PM me with your e-mail address.
Thanks.
ps I'm about to release eight more of my charts designed as MMO play-alongs that were recorded by my percussionist on his CD.

Is the CD out yet?

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

It's good stuff. Eight of my songs and three by Bill O'Connell, the pianist for Dave Valentin. Plus the standard, Cubano Chant.

I guess I should audition it. I work for a company that has 3 Brazilian steak houses. I was asked to comment on the one in Niagara Falls it's always got a line up, even on a Tuesday at -15 in January. Renovations are taking place and the place is still packed to the rafters. The 'Brazilian' band was all set up wrong for the space, and the 'show' was, good, but the lighting sucked. I told them that, gently.
It was a free weekend for the wife and I at the Hilton and the night out in Niagara, they wanted me to look at 3 or 4 things and that took and hour plus feedback about the bar. I told him, heck the place is packed, I could sing Quando Quando Quando and use my accordion and wear leaderhosen but that would be too much fun. They need good music for between sets...
They also have one in Toronto and one opening in Florida.

You're a handy guy to know, John. Many musicians have zero knowledge about lighting. The only thing I know is that the heat from spotlights can sometimes mess up my valves.

Ha, I've had 4 places change to LED. NO Heat. Any Colour. Lots of new stuff just on the market for the small group. 2 flat LED panels on a stand, inputs for midi or sound to change them. Some of them are inexpensive. As Notes always says, it's about the experience. In the right venue, if you get an inexpensive system to run lighting the programming is simple. I have not tried it with Band in a Box but I bet I could make the thing work on the Solo track...but I need another track cause I use the solo track as midi 5 to the voicelive.

Thanks Matt,
I sent you the PM of my email address.
Pardon my ignorance, what does "MMO" mean? I'll just assume being it was your percussionist that it will also be in the flavor of Brazilian jazz? That would be right up my alley. Let us know when it is complete.
Thanks, RickeG

MMO - Music Minus One
That way, you can play the lead part to the established accompaniment.
I'm assuming I got that right, Matt?

Sorry - Yes - Music Minus One. If I have the time, I plan to be able to drop any instrument, not just the lead.
The upcoming album has some Brazilian jazz, but I would call it primarily Latin jazz. It's my music, but featuring a New York - Puerto-Rican-influenced percussionist. I was pleasantly surprised how my sambas and bossa novas translated so easily to Latin jazz. We used BIAB to audition many different styles in the CD's planning stage, and the tool was invaluable.

Thanks John & Matt. You know how it goes... you miss one newspaper and you are out of the loop with the techie terms.
Matt, I am right there with you. Being a former north-easterner I was around a variety of styles that contained brass arrangements. Everything from Latin influenced jazz to fusion and some of what I call "Con-fusion" was there at one time. Which package of BIAB gave you the South American styles you auditioned? Presently, I have the package one level up from the basic. There are a lot of styles. I would just like to see more in the vein of the styles of Jazz that have more of a Latin or Funk influence. If I had my choice that is the pocket I would like to play in.
