Hello all:

I'm looking for a good collection of premade .SGU files to purchase and play around with. After looking around a bit I found the site shown below. It looks interesting and even has some demo's that are downloadable for testing. Is it an OK site (as in legit) to purchase from? Does anyone have experience purchasing from this site? I'm really interested in their Disk #18 Latin Fake Book.

Can anyone recommend other sites where I can get really good .SGUs from either free or for purchase?

Lastly, does anyone sell custom-made .STY files for BIAB? Is that even legal?

Thanks,

Norton Music sells tons of great styles (MIDI only, but you can substitute RealTracks and Drums once you get the style). He also sells fakebooks for backing tracks of popular songs. Be aware his work IS legal and does not contain melodies, because it is NOT legal to sell those unless you have paid the appropriate royalties and obtained permissions.

'Notes' Norton is a cut above. He is an accomplished professional musician and busy performer, knows music theory cold, and has been in the business of producing add-ons for BIAB since almost the beginning. I first remember his ads back in the 1990s. I have bought some of his styles and fakebooks, and they are all quality work.

The problem with music from the Internet is that it is often wrong. That's a problem not limited to Internet downloadable sites; there are plenty of fakebooks and transcriptions and 'piano reductions' out there that are just wrong. I have made lots of money from transcriptions in my career, and a quality product like Note's stands out. From almost any other source, you will have to judge the quality, but not from Norton Music. I have purchased from him when I found myself having to perform a song I did not know at a wedding with short notice, and it was easier to buy the chart rather than transcribe it myself as a one-off. I knew I would get the real thing from Notes.

Thanks for the answers!! I'll go ahead and make a purchase from Norton Music.
$48.95 for 500 songs (#18 Latin Fake Book) doesn't sound too bad!

OK, I made the purchase. PROBLEM!

When trying to load "most" of the files I get an error message that says "Access Violation at address...".

Some of the files load correctly. What's strange is that if I click on OK on that error window and then click OK on the next Error window, it shows only a few bars filled in. If I then click on any of the bars, all of the bars are filled in. Hmmm, pretty strange!

I will contact Norton Music for support. I'm so disappointed. Dang!!!

You may have a corrupted download. I haven't heard of this happening elsewhere, so perhaps try downloading again if you are able, and see if that assists.

I feel confident that Norton Music will definitely work with you to resolve your issue.

I downloaded again and unzipped to a new folder. Same results.

So, I contacted Norton Music via email and am currently working with Bob to get this figured out.

Thanks!

I have never had an issue with any Norton product. That sounds more like a BIAB or computer problem than a problem with his stuff. I am sure he will help you get it figured out.

First and foremost, thank you all for the kind words about my products and the referral.

I've been audited by BMI twice, and all my styles and fake files are legal. The money I spent on a lawyer for advice when I went into business was worth it.

And yes, I've been selling these since they went out on 3.5" and 5.25" floppy disks.

Sadly, huertaaj is having a problem with my files. In all the years I've been selling fake disks and e-disks, I've never run into this before.

So it's a challenge. I sent 4 different files out this morning in an attempt to narrow down the issue.

It seems huertaaj got one to run by clicking through the error message, at my request he sent me the fixed file. I noticed it is smaller and doesn't have the memo file attached.

I don't know if the memo is the issue, as it never has been for anyone else, or whatever happened to fix the problem also stripped the memo.

It seems when loading an error message occurs, clicking through the message loads the file, then when it is saved it no longer has the file, nor the memo. So I sent out (1) an unzipped file of the same song he sent me (2) the same file without a memo (3) a different file from fake e-disk #5 assigned with a MIDI file and (4) a style from fake e-disk #37 with a real style.

If anyone else has had a problem similar to this, I would love to hear from you. E-mail me with the file.

If anyone has any ideas for me to consider, I'd welcome them.

If I can't get it to work, I may involve PG Music who when I have run up against the wall once before helped me a lot.

If we can't get it to work, it'll be the first one since I started in 1992, and of course, I'll refund the money.

Bob, I see he has Windows 10, as I do. I'll PM you my email address. Send me one of the files that failed and I'll test it.

Absolutely no issues for years using Norton Styles. Really perfect, as well as the docs provided.

I just hope that Bob doesn't have 500 manipulations (X?) to run these files on the damn machine haha.

My first thought is an anti-virus program is interfering with the file installation.

It would be very helpful to know what the error message says. Any chance of attaching a screen shot of the error message?

Update:

Bob from Norton Music has very caringly been working with me to try to figure out why the problem occurs. I understand that this may be the first time that the Norton Music files have a problem with BIAB but apparently not the first time this type of error has occurred in BIAB. A quick look at the BIAB update history shows that this problem was fixed in BUILD UPDATE 804 for BIAB 2021 for Windows. That update from December 4, 2020 shows the following which is exactly what is happening on my system when loading those MIDI files...

Fixed: Importing some MIDI files might cause access violation.

Excellent. That's great that you got it sorted out. And it's probably a good reminder for all of us to apply the latest updates as they become available.

It's not sorted out yet.

I'm beginning to suspect it might be a PG Music problem and with huertaaj's permission I am going to involve them in it.

The thing that I find curious is that only one person is reporting the problem.

So far
Quote:

It seems when loading an error message occurs, clicking through the message loads the file, then when it is saved it no longer has the file, nor the memo. So I sent out (1) an unzipped file of the same song he sent me (2) the same file without a memo (3) a different file from fake e-disk #5 assigned with a MIDI file and (4) a style from fake e-disk #37 with a real style.

The unzipped file (1) loads fine

The same file without the memo (2) loads fine

A style from fake disk 5 (3) loads fine

A file from fake disk #37 loads fine.

So, suspecting perhaps something in the old zip got corrupted, I re-zipped the disk huertaaj bought and e-mailed it to him. After unzipping, the same problem occurred.

Is the zip compression leaving something essential out? And if so, why only on one person's computer?

To be continued ... ... ...

Hello all:

Problem solved as far as I can tell. It turns out that the Unzip program that my Windows 10/64 program was defaulting to was not unzipping correctly. Why? Who knows. I downloaded a free Unzip program called Express Zip and that did the trick. Now all the files load and play correctly without any errors!!

I should say that Bob was EXTREMELY helpful and super patient with me. We went back and forth via email around 30 times trying to solve the issue. I strongly recommend purchasing from Norton Music. The files are great and Bob's support is fabulous.

That’s all great.

You could consider going back to your first post and click on Mark as Resolved.

I use Express Zip now but I know there are many choices. What was the Zip program you had been using?

All is well that ends well.

I'd like to say I solved the problem, but I had no clue, huertaaj solved it himself.

My thanks to you huertaaj, for all your kindness, cooperation, input, and patience during this process.

Now if anyone else has the same problem, I know what to recommend first.
