TRANSFIGURED NIGHT / VERKLÄRTE NACHT (Arnold Schoenberg) (beginning)

The 1899 composition, originally a string sextet, tells the story of a night that begins one way and ends another. You can read the poem on which it was based in Wikipedia. This version covers the beginning of the story, like so:

A man and a woman walk through a bare wood on a cold, cloudless, moonlit night. The woman says, “Before we met, I longed so desperately for a child that I embraced a stranger to make it happen. Now I am to bear that child, but life is punishing me, for now I have met you, and here we are.” She walks on, stumbling, staring ahead. The moon is very bright, and it follows them.

That's where this thing fades out. I hope to return to it and tell the rest of the story.

NOTES

Playing time: 2:53

This version is based on a MIDI transcription for piano 4 hands. It is a faithful arrangement of that for Logic Pro synthesizers, with a heavy electric band augmenting. There are no synthetic vocals, and nothing is weird, though the mood is grim. This is not electronic dance music.

RealTracks:
2588:Bass, Electric, PunkFuzzPicked8ths Ev 165
2584:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm PunkMuted Ev 165
RealDrums: RockHardLA^1-a:Snare, HiHat

Logic Pro instruments:
Vintage B3 Organ / Heavy Metal Organ
Synthesizer / Brass / Analog Horns (4)

That works REALLY well.
It's a good piece to start with and the sturm und drang of the strum n bang additions highlight things.
The occasional BIAB chord clunk can be heard but it's not detrimental.
Thanks I enjoyed this.

Glad you did! Thank you!

I think I know the clunkers you mean, but even if they are due to a bug in BIAB, I wouldn't change any. They are my chords now and I love them as if I had written them myself. Listen, how brightly they crunch and chunk! BIAB has transfused them with splendour.

That was cool, more accessible than I would have thought. The poem certainly helps, and really creates a dark mood, at least in my mind. For me, the synths are drowning out the realtracks. I would be interested to know if that solo piano would blend in if I could actually hear it. I suspect not. But I could be wrong (something I say daily and often).

Doesn't it? =8^) German Expressionism, yikes.

It has nothing to do with the poem, but listening to this makes me think of King Kong atop the Empire State Building, after the final volley of gunfire from the planes, the last few seconds before he falls.

About the piano, I can explain! It's not drowned out, it's not there – I drop it and the strings from the mix immediately after the intro.

The only RealTrack material for the main song is guitar, bass, and drums, and if you really listen to that chunking guitar, you can hear it isn't always on the exact same page as the synths, but it can get away with it 'cos it's being chunky, funky, and punky and contributing a texture more than anything.

If, however, I were to let a BIAB RealTrack with more harmonic content persist alongside the actual notes of Arnie's piece, it would be a noisy mess. I tried, with the piano and the strings, yuuuck. Overlaying a complex piece like this with a BIAB chord sheet doesn't work, unless BIAB is functioning as more of a rhythm section.

Thank you for listening and for the feedback!

Ah, I thought that might be the case. I can hear the guitar, it works well.

Thank you sir. I will try to make sure it stays crunchy, even in the milk of a happy ending.

TuneMonger, just to let you know, I've deleted the piano and strings tracks and updated the link. They were not part of the actual composition, and my arrangement should not have created confusing expectations, especially not by tacking on non-Schoenberg material. Shame on me for that – pulling a bait-and-switch with flaccid strings, for fear of alienating the listener with heavy organ! The arrangement is now shorter but better. Thank you for your help.

Hey Mark,

I'm not sure you needed to make the change, but I listened again and yes, it's better this way IMHO. So, well done!

Thanks, Scott. I think what really rocks this orchestra is the combination of barking walrus guitar and rocket engine organ, it's like an Ocean of Ominous for the synths bobbing on top of it. Appreciate the comment!

The updated version is more Deep Purple, (the best part of that band, to my ears, was Jon Lord's organ), - it's interesting that the melody almost falls into a wedding march in spots.
I like BOTH versions.

You could mix this to achieve that aim. The elements are there...you'd probably have to wear shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather while mixing though.

Hi Mark,

The music captures the atmosphere of the beginning of the poem very well.
If it should tell the story of the whole poem, it should end in a sweeter way.
Could be interesting music too.
I had a stepfather, couldn't have had a better father than him. That's why I like the poem very much.

Wrote a song about the other one, who didn't care about me. The first song I ever wrote. Music's not Biab.
This is it.

Mark.
this is very different.

i hear it more with orchestral drums/tympani and instruments like kettle drums etc etc....sprinkled
sparesly through the piece.

it evoked in me music for a dark type of film.
eg like one of the old peter cushing hammer films.
nice job...and it kept me wanting to continue to listen.

happiness.

Anne-Marie,

What a wonderful thing to be able to do this, yes? To take inspiration from another's song and create something that is truly, and deeply, yours. Thank you for sharing this, on this particular occasion.

On YouTube, I saw "Rammstein" and thought, no, it can't be THAT Rammstein, which I only think of as the German band where the deep-voiced guy sets himself on fire. But it is! "Mutter" – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNdnVVHfseA

I'm sure you know John Lennon's "Mother", which cuts it to the bone:

Mother
You had me
But I never had you

I have my own resonances here. I also had two fathers, but in both cases my story was like John's song continues, so, no love songs for them.

Thanks for your thoughts on my piece. I do plan on making a second, sweeter part, from the same original composition, and that will complete this project.

Mark
