TRANSFIGURED NIGHT / VERKLÄRTE NACHT (Arnold Schoenberg) (beginning)

The 1899 composition, originally a string sextet, tells the story of a night that begins one way and ends another. You can read the poem on which it was based in Wikipedia. This version covers the beginning of the story, like so:

A man and a woman walk through a bare wood on a cold, cloudless, moonlit night. The woman says, “Before we met, I longed so desperately for a child that I embraced a stranger to make it happen. Now I am to bear that child, but life is punishing me, for now I have met you, and here we are.” She walks on, stumbling, staring ahead. The moon is very bright, and it follows them.

That's where this thing fades out. I hope to return to it and tell the rest of the story.

NOTES

Playing time: 2:53

This version is based on a MIDI transcription for piano 4 hands. It is a faithful arrangement of that for Logic Pro synthesizers, with a heavy electric band augmenting. There are no synthetic vocals, and nothing is weird, though the mood is grim. This is not electronic dance music.
