Hi guys, This is about Room Resonance I played a 20hz - 20khz logarithmic sine wav from https://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_sinesweep20-20k.php while holding a phone with an app (Spectroid) in front of my nose sitting where I sit when mixing. Not scientific by any means but interesting none the less to check the resonances in my 22 x 11 ft., music room. My headphones (ATH-M40fs) and my speakers (JBL LSR308's) sound so drastically different I was curious what it would show. I did my "test' twice and both times it showed a pretty big spike at 214hz , smaller ones at 132hz and 120hz and smaller ones yet at 47hz and 59hz. 47hz-83db 59hz-86db 120hz-89db 132hz-89db 214hz-80db There was no way to dl or save the eq curve else I'd show it. Obviously my room has bass issues. My speakers have +/-2db hi and low filters which are set to zero. I don't see where that would help much...would it? I'm not sure what to do with the info..... I cannot afford to professionally "treat" the room. Any thoughts? Josie

Can you make some simple panels and place them at angles within the room and/or in places around the perimeter of the room? Perhaps lean them against the walls at an angle. Even some heavy curtain material hung from the ceiling in places might disrupt these resonant frequencies from occurring.

Set the low filter on the speakers and run the test again. How does the test sound now? If the db numbers look better and the speakers sound more natural, leave it filter engaged. If not, disengage the filter. No harm done.
A big part of mixing is learning your mix room and trusting your ears.

Hi Josie, I have a similar set of 8" JBLs, the JBL LSR4328s. They came with a room test mic and software to help you tune to the room frequencies. You may be able to find that for yours. Another tool in my arsenal is Sonarworks. With that I was able to tune my JBLs and my headphones for a flat frequency response. They offer a free trial of the software. I ended up purchasing, not too expensive.

..My headphones (ATH-M40fs) and my speakers (JBL LSR308's) sound so drastically different .. I would hope so My speakers can kick me in the chest .. my headphones; well I wouldn't expect them to do that They *should sound different. Maybe describe the room you are trying to fix (?) 22 X 11 seems a bit long so back wall dampening may help with reflections as others noted, but other things come into play; carpet floor? brick wall? Maybe a picture of the room would help

22 x 11 is a bit unfortunate, as length is exactly twice the width. I guess around 8ft high and 22 is not much away from 8x3. There's a calculator ++ here ++ that might help thoughts. Ideally, music rooms/studios have walls not at right angles, but the real world doesn't usually agree. If it isn't too disruptive, curtains hung from the ceiling a few feet from one end should help. AudioTrack's panels suggestion could also be arranged to reflect sound rather more randomly. You could experiment with curtains hung over a rail between stepladders or chairbacks.
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful.

Which way do you play? Along the 11 ft wall or the 22 ft wall? Do you record instruments with mics at all or are all the instruments from software? Is the issue only a concern for mixing or for recording too? Something you can try for very little money is to use whatever wood you may have laying around to build "frames" that you can hang blankets from and put them 6 feet behind you when you play back to mix. My studio before the redo had 2 bifold doors I got free from Craigslist that I stapled wood blankets that I got from Goodwill to. I set them up exactly how I described with the 60 degree angle formed by the door at the far end away from me. So /\ rather than \/. It helped a lot. Plus my monitors were "bass light" so everything I did sounded bass heavy, as I added more bass to compensate for the bass light monitors.
I think I am trying to find a way to say that there are many options to overcome this. Starting with engaging the -2db cut switch.

Hey guys, thanks for all your thoughts! I engaged the -2b on the monitors. That app didn't show much difference. I don't understand that app. I get the hz but I don't know what the db for the hz is supposed to be...so I'm done with it. It sounds not boomy now. I'm gonna just try to get close to the ref track(s) check the tonal balance, hope for the best and try not to get so ocd worrying about it. This room was once a carport. It has linoleum tile floor and painted panel walls. 3 windows and 6 doors. Sofa, loveseat, and rocker with soft cushions, bookcases with books, old computer, various other stuff. I don't keep my guitar in here since I rarely play it. I have a little yamaha keyboard that I sometimes write with but mostly I just use BIAB, RB and Reaper. I mostly use the headphones but I like to use the speakers too for mixing. I have two garment racks on wheels I keep quilts and old comforters on for recording. MIc stand on a small rug. One rack gets rolled in front of the outside door in the center of the short wall when not in use. I'll try putting the other one 6 ft behind me when mixing but there's already a loveseat on that slanted short wall with an off center door that is open to the kitchen. My desk is perpendicular to the long right wall about two thirds down the room and approx 15 inches out from that wall. So the center of my right speaker is about two feet from that wall. And my left speaker is almost in the middle of the room. Sitting here I face the short wall and door going outside. I could be wrong but I had a thought that after the flood, moving things around, moving things out and more clutter finding it's way in here could've all changed the sound of the room. So I have spent the day getting rid of clutter and putting it back the way it was.  I'll try and get a picture or two. Might be after the playoffs.  Thank y'all for your help. Josie, any chance of getting some carpet on the floor, even some 2nd-hand carpet or some cheap floor rugs scattered around? That hard surface on the floor may also be a contributor.
