I keep track of the icons I like better, which up to now has been the transport icons I made colorized versions of several years ago. There are fewer than ten lines I modify from the default settings.
I ran into trouble a few years ago, one year after first modifying the default. Since then, I make a copy of the default and modify only a few lines on my copy each year.
