The Gates of Babylon

You sit alone at the table, while I take my coffee in bed
Our happy home's just a no-man's land where even angels refuse to tread

Angry words fall silent now that we've said much too much
I hold back my hurt inside;
You hold back your touch

I could scale the Zagros mountains, or be covered by salty sea
But I can't bridge this emptiness dividing you from me

Close your eyes and pray for sleep, but prayers fall on deaf ears
We hold our breath and count the hours until the morning sun reappears

Lost without direction, unwilling to turn around
Falling apart together, divided on common ground

I could scale the Zagros mountains, or be covered by salty sea
But I can't bridge this emptiness dividing you from me

So many bridges burned, too many chances gone
Now that we've been turned away at the gates of Babylon

I could scale the Zagros mountains, or be covered by salty sea
But I can't bridge this emptiness dividing you from me

Backstory

This is a remix of a song I posted in 2014. The original version was done with Vocaloids, and while the result was pleasant to listen to, I always wanted to re-do it.

Since SynthesizerV could import the Vocaloid files, it should be simple enough... right?

It would be, if I would stop re-doing the mix. Listen, tweak, listen again, tweak some more... render out and listen again. Lather, rinse, repeat. blush

As usual, the mix is a work in progress.

The trumpet solo is actually a mix of the WIVI Band trumpet and a RealTrack.

Comments of any sort are encouraged! laugh

Very impressive, David!
Love the trumpet.
And the vocals are sounding pretty good indeed!
I'm waiting for them to offer a deep male voice with a bluesy feel so I won't need to sing on my songs anymore eek
Good song, enjoyed!

"Lost without direction, unwilling to turn around
Falling apart together, divided on common ground"

A beautifully written song. SUCH sadness!
The synth voice is well done and has SOME emotion - but I would love to hear this sung by a "real singer with chops" - to really bring those emotions home. It's a real tearjerker.

The production is nicely supportive. Doing what it needs to and not "getting in the way".
The trumpet is a nice choice.

Nice mix.

Very nice sad song oozing emptiness. Really beautiful melody, reminds me, as usual, of APP. Very good work with Eleanor, although I hear some boominess in her voice, maybe low cut would help, don't know. I've been listening to Solaria songs lately just to make sure she's worth buying, so I probably pay too much attention to the smallest details smile
Excellent instrument selection, very smooth and the trumpet soloist works very well.

Hi David,

What a lovely song!
The music is beautiful and this Vocaloid is so much better than the synth voices used to be.
It almost sounds human.

We agree with Floyd however, that a human voice might perfect it.
A real singer could sing "before or after the count" for instance. Don't know if that's the right expression in English. We mean: not one syllable exactly on one beat, but just before or after it. It makes the melody more lively.

But... a treat to the ear smile !

David, you are a master of AI vocals. They are starting to sound very organic!

Super lyrics, arrangement, and mix.

Outstanding trumpet!

Super song.

David,
Smooth arrangement. Nice poetic lyrics and amazing effort putting all this together. Trumpet sounds great. I think vocals are not leveled throughout the song. At times, it seems they overpower everything else. Don't hold me to it, maybe I am hallucinating. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Hi, Dave.

Thanks! That's about half me on MIDI and half Band in a Box on the trumpet. The first half of the BiaB solo was a jazzy riff that didn't fit at all, but the second half was perfect. I was surprised how well the two different instruments blended here.

The end solo is all BiaB. Love the trumpet!

Ha!

The male voices are really lacking, so you're safe for now. smile

All right, I'll start giving it some serious consideration.

I thought that's what details were for - to pay attention to! wink

I'll have another listen and see if I can hear the low end. It may be the other voices that are causing the issue as well.

Thanks for your close attention! laugh

I know exactly what you're saying.

The sad thing is, that's actually what I've done here - nudged the notes around the beat by an 8th or 16th note. But a real singer can do the same thing and make it sound natural and musical.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment!
