Problem solved - Andrews rec of reconecting the drive the enclosure worked. The drive was not making good internal contact with the case conector. If your drive is intermiited like mine was, try Andrews suggestion with a USB connection known to work with your drive.
Thanks again for your ideas. This is the best user support group in technology!
