Great replies which has turned out to be an interesting thread from my humble first post.

Just watched my first video of his on youtube.

He seems to be saying in this video that if playing a melodic line on a guitar, that you should be able just to hold the strings down with your left hand, and use your right hand as normal as if you are playing the melody.
Wants to convince the student on stage that if he can't do this, then something is wrong.

To be honest I don't see any sense in what he is talking about.
