In the 2022 version, I have noticed that the spelling of notes (e.g. Eb vs. D#) is changed according to the chord name over those notes.

This might make the “spelling” of chord tones easier, but often makes reading the notes more difficult.

In earlier versions of BB this could be manually corrected, but now it seems that after correction the spelling returns to the original decision made by BB.

Have any of you noticed this, and if so is there a way to avoid this?

I'm not sure but this may be related to a change in enharmonic notation.

What key signature do you have your song set to?

At about the 9:20 mark in this video an explanation of why D# might instead be called Eb is given, but I don't really comprehend it myself.

Could you please send us an example of the song, or some of the chords you have used in the song together with the style, etc that has produced unexpected results? We can try to emulate your experience and hopefully confirm, or suggest workarounds.

I just discovered:

Options → Preferences → Notation → uncheck “use chord scale for enharmonics”

I have not yet had time to check whether this works, but it seems worth a try!

The enharmonic spelling - i.e Eb being the same note as D# on the keyboard - is conventionally based on the key of the song, rather than the chord. Enharmonic spelling convention also comes into play to ease the reading of a melody line - i.e it is more logical for musicians to read G->G#->A rather than G->Ab->A - even though the notes are audibly the same.

Band-in-a-Box gives you the option to view your notation in a way that best works for you! Attached below is an explanation of the "Use chord scale for enharmonics" function found in | Options | Preferences | Notation |.

Use chord scale for enharmonics - If enabled, note accidentals will be based on chord scales rather than the key of the song. For example, in the key of Eb, an Eb note will appear as a D# over a B7 chord. This is because B7 inplies the E major scale which uses D# instead of Eb.

Hope this helps clarify!

One of the main reasons for enharmonic spellings is that each key should contain only one meaning of each letter, so one doesn't have D and D# within the key, one has a D and an 'E' (Eb). That's also why we have Cb, Fb, E# and B#. All of that simplifies the use of the normal 5-line stave and allows normal diatonic scales to be written and read most easily (in theory :-) )

That doesn't stop us thinking, inside our own heads, that F#Maj == GbMaj, or that Cbm == Bm.

Of course out-of-scale notes force us to put in the flats, naturals and sharps as appropriate. That's the consequence of the compromise.
