I largely concur other than I would visualise range constrained by track rather than by instrument ... I think trying to do it per-instrument could be a never-ending task.

Edit ... with VSTis, there's always the option of generating the MIDI by playing or importing, so there are already ways to do this. But I figured others may already have methods that I could borrow.
