What a wonderful reminder of Wynton’s genius.

As a youngster, I hated Wynton’s music with a passion.
Then, on a jazz summer camp, I was in a band led by John Ruocco, a great teacher, tenor saxophone player, clarinetist whom I worship for his modernity, his lyricism and avant gardism.

When some students and I started criticizing Wynton Marsalis, he lectured us -albeit in a fatherly manner.

He said: “I have never heard Wynton play one single note that wasn’t sincere”.

That shut me up, big time.

Musical preferences aside (I do like Branford’s music a lot more than I do Wynton’s), I’ve come to respect this great man’s work.

@Gordon, what you write in your comment is so deep and true. Helps remind me of the need to be open minded: towards the past as well as towards the future.
