I have guitars without any locking devices on the strings. They require more frequent tuning than the guitars I have with various string locking devices.
I like the guitars I have that have Floyd Rose or Kahler bridges. Both of those types lock the string at the nut and provide for tuning at the bridge. The downside is that it is more difficult to get the locking nut at the right height. They are a true PITA to change a string when you break one.
All my newer Tom Anderson guitars have locking screws that secure the string at the tuning knob. I don't find that they are all that useful as I just don't have issues with string slip when I change my own strings.
Once you have played the guitar with a Floyd style bridge and stretched the strings out it will stay in tune until you stretch the strings more by playing. The more bends you do the quicker this will happen.
If I am playing on stage I check the tuning after just about every song. If I am playing every night, I change the strings every night.
The bottom line...nice to have stuff but we played for years without it.

“Amazing! I’ll be working with Jaco Pastorius, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, and Buddy Rich, and you’re telling me it’s not that great of a gig? “Well…” Saint Peter, hesitated, “God’s got this girlfriend who thinks she can sing…”

My SG stays in tune exceptionally well,....... UNTIL..... I break a string. Then, it's a dumpster fire of trying to tune the remaining 5 strings to finish the song or bending them to hit the right notes. Has to do with the tremolo on the guitar. All my guitars since that SG have been non-tremolo models. I've never played a locking bridge tremolo guitar. No particular reason. Maybe because country, which is what I made my living with, rarely had whammy dives in it. When I was playing for a living, I changed my strings every two weeks. Ernie Ball Super Slinky and I would wipe them down at the end of the night. They would last about a month but I changed them every two weeks for tone and reliability. I removed the whammy bar because it was essentially useless if you used it with any level of force. However..... there is a device called the Evertune Guitar Bridge.... It's downright amazing but requires considerable wood working skills to install it. Routing the back is required. BUT... In a video I saw, once it is set up, adjusted, and the guitar is in tune, you can whammy bar it down until the strings flap and release it and it's back in perfect tune. https://www.evertune.com/shop/index.php videos of it in action. Wow.....

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I bought this Gretsch Rat Rod used and the previous owner installed Kluson Revolution Locking tuners before I bought the guitar. They are 19:1 ratio. I’m sort of ashamed to admit that in a year of ownership and probably 100 hours of use, I haven’t changed the strings yet to experience the benefits during a string change. That said I can’t say that they help keep the guitar in tune better than the factory tuners. I do use the Bigsby for a little natural chorus on ends of phrases. They do not help with big temperature swings like at our church where the temp can increase 15 degrees f from pre service run through to the end of the service!

For many years I used my olde Tele no trem bar no need for locking tuners or the like. It stays in tune for a very long period. In fact I play strings in then tune it. If I need to retune I change the strings it stays in tune that well and always has. Before the Tele I had a Strat I could never keep in tune.
Recently I purchased a Yamaha Pacifica 612 which has a trem and is fitted with Grosvenor Locking tuners and a Graftech nut. This guitar stays in tune really well even when pulling strings (not that I pull hard) and using the trem. If it sounds a bit off just give the trem a good push and all comes fine again. When I first pulled it out of the box I yanked the B string out of the tuner, replaced the string and all is fine.
I’m really pleased with the locking tuners. They make replacing a string very quick. A bit scary at first but really good.
My thoughts and experience Tony
