A friend of mine did a long, expensive jazz improvisation course. He came away VERY disappointed.
They taught licks across scales and scales across licks...find your favourite lick and learn it in all keys n scales so you can play it any/every time...is how he summarized the course.
I think I'm quite fortunate to be a plodding bassist. I work out my parts, add joining runs as suits the song and by the time the song's tracked my limited improvisation is done...I don't have to stun with brilliance or JacoPastoriousleadplayeronthewronginstrumentness - if I serve the song I've won.
