Goodness! I love this forum (and I love Band-in-a-Box). Where else on the internet can you get a bunch of generous people so willing to share. Awesome stuff. David. I haven't listened to that Cat Stevens yet (although I do know loads of his stuff but never really listened with a critical ear). I will put it on my headphones and go for a walk. That is exactly what I am trying to achieve with this album. Focus on the vocals and don't let anything else distract from that.

I think where this process has been so valuable is that I tend to get into a habit of doing something that may not always serve the song well. For example, with my harmonies, I always pan them hard left and right and try and introduce a bit of "variety" so that they "add something". To Jim's point, they don't really add, they subtract....so now I will pan them closer and have them doing more uniform stuff so that they don't distract from the lead vocal.

Here is the next version of Dairy. I have added a desser to the lead vocal.

https://joannecooper.co.za/track/3026515/diary-version-4

I would love to get feedback on one other song and then I will hopefully be on my way with a "template" to work with. Let me know which one I should post. The songs I have recorded are

Always on my Mind
Amazed
Cant Help but Wonder Where Im Bound
Fly Me to the Moon
Follow Me
Free Electric Band
I Have a Dream
When I Need You
I'll have to say I love you in a Song
Moon River
Sunshine on my Shoulders
Wind beneath my Wings
Could I have this Dance

This much better.

My only complaint is that loud click around the 30 second mark. I find that very distracting, but again that is just my opinion.

IMHO lower that click sound and you have a winner.

yep, much better
The click Mario mentioned .. not sure if it is an editing artifact or a guitar noise .. didn't bother me so much FWIW
the whole sound is much better on this one with the organic strings instead of synth
nice job

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Diary V4. I like the lead vocal. It sounds much better and blends with the other tracks.

The 30 sec sound some have commented on sounds like a string squeak to me.

The whole song sounds more cohesive and together.

One last trick you may want to try to see if you can make the song more cohesive. Engage your DAW mono setting and listen to the complete mix. You should hear every track sit one on top of the other. When, in mono mode, each track sits on top of each other then each track one is occupying it's preferred frequency space. Each track will be louder or quieter but you should hear the tracks stacked together. If not then the mix has a equalization or phasing issue.

Hi Joanne,

here's some feed back and suggestions - take what you find useable, and throw the rest away :-)

Fly Me To The Moon - the mix is crisp and clear, but to my taste you overdo the harmony vocals - there's simply too much of them - less is more. (They're not badly performed...on the contrary I would say) If you want to do some backing, some soft and gentle ooh's and aah's might be worth a try, I would expect these to keep more focus on your lead vocal. Another suggestion you might want to try out - when you sing the non verbal part in the middle of the song - try to add some subtle 12-stage Phaser with a slight stereo movement, you might want to add it to the middle part of that section....it'll create a bit of spice. Not dominant, just a tiny bit above barely noticeable as an effect.

Wind Beneath My Wings - a slight miss of vocal timing at 0:48. Your chorus harmonies are spot on - thumbs up. I miss a little presence of the bass, and maybe a bit more temperament in your Lead Vocal.

Moon River - A little nudge backwards with the rimshot - it's a bit dominating. Have you considered to play the same notes on the acoustic guitar (or maybe a dry Telecaster with a twist of presence) along with your solo non verbal vocal in the middle bridge?

I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song - I think this song could take a bit of rock'n roll in the arrangement

When I Need You - a bit more bass to challenge the drums. The guitar licks you bring in at 2:25'sh should go a bit more to the center, and with some subtle overdrive and reverb sit in the back, and be audible in both channels. (I would experiment adding a tape delay with a bit of dirt if you dislike overdrive)

So far you've been doing a great job, and please disregard the comments above, if you consider them to be rubbish.

Cheers
Peter

Hello Joanne,
you've a lovely interpretation of a lovely song.

Nice intro.
The vocal is generally very, very nice but there's something a little strident in it that needs EQ to soften it with a cut at about 3350 or so and make sure the reverb isn't exaggerating what ever freq you settle on as well.
The moment when the guitars go mono - at 0.24 focussing on the centre panned one for a moment - is odd and took all of my attention. It does reflection the very beginning of the intro but seems out of place at that point.
The 1st visit of cello could be a little quieter - just a bit mind.
The panned bvox are cool
The higher strings don't add much and are a little too aggressively bowed to add to the mood.
The bass notes move about a bit in the stereo image. It may be worth while grouping the acoustics and monoing the bass frequencies of them so that the bass sits low & centre. OR put a high pass on them to remove the bass tones and add a bass to the arrangement.
Lastly the right acoustic has a lot of plectrum click which is, generally, covered by the other instruments but stick out in the last chords.

Thank you Ray and Peter. What wonderful feedback and shows how I am not listening critically to my song. This is a habit I need to develop

Great tips Ray. I think I can apply some of that logic to rest of the tracks. The lead vocal definitely sounds "softer" now. Here is the next version

That's a nice remix and sounds ace though the vocal now is just a little "hot" in my headphones "She wouldn't show it" at around 2.40 may be a good spot to visit and hear what my head phones translate. It MAY be my gain staging though.

Hi Ray
I reduced the gain on the offending section by a couple of DBs.
