I am majorly less likely. I don't like having to sit still and stare at a screen (even if that's what I do most of the time anyway) when I can listen and be visually and physically free. But if it's posted as a vid, I feel like that's what I'm signing up for by clicking the triangle; if I try to listen and not watch, I'll feel very confused and conflicted and guilty.

So, assuming I'm not the only one, if I want a song to to be heard, I will not post a video to be watched.

Wondering how others feel.

I just listen.

But there is an exception. If I’m trying to learn a song, sometimes I like to see what they are doing.

Same (more or less).

Often a user goes to extra lengths to be creative by providing a vision accompaniment. If that's the case, I'll watch and listen.

Another thing favoring audio is you can reply to a song while listening to it – I'm a good typist but I can't type a post blind while watching a video.

I am more likely if there is a description of what genre it is.

Personally, I find it just as easy to listen to a video as it is to watch one. If I'm not in the mood for watching a video I just listen to the music same as I would the radio, a tape, or a record.

Neither.

But I prefer to listen for the first time through the song, though.

It would depend on the choice I had. If it is a song here that someone posted and had both, I would listen to both. The two things are not directly comparable.

Sometimes the videos are more interesting than the song in question.

If I am trying to learn a song I prefer to see a live video.

If it is a song I do not have on CD, I am going to look for it on youtube and generally, there will be a video to go with the song, again, no choice.

If I am randomly listening to stuff on SoundCloud there will not be a video.

If there is a choice, I will always default to live so how could you ever separate the visual from the music?

If the song is one I have listened to and seen many times and it happens to be a video, I don't think I pay very much attention to the visual. The point is there are many songs I like well enough to listen to many times and only a few visuals I want to see more than a few times.

Given our many hours of planning, scene location work, lip syncing and then time editing the raw video for the many vids we’ve posted I am a bit disappointed to read some of the remarks. But I assuredly respect everybody’s opinion. Interestingly on FB our vids typically get somewhat more reactions and comments than our audio alone posts.

Google and Vimeo analytics do indicate the percent for which videos are watched to completion smile Unlike SoundCloud where merely clicking/tapping start will count as a listen.

And therein lies the exact message in my response:

Neither. The song is the deciding factor.

I can listen without being compelled to watch, or can listen and watch. It depends on my mood, and after that the video.

The videos I'm most compelled to watch are the band playing 'live'. But often the camera isn't on the person I want to see. The guitarist might be playing a great solo, and the cameraman focused on the drummer or bass player.

But the music is the deciding factor.

After reading Notes post I should append my answer. If it's a band performing live I will watch it. However, I don't consider that a video. I consider it video of a live performance, but a "music video" to me is slow motion clips of someone with an umbrella running through a field of daisies and then jumping into a pool for no apparent reason.

Happy Thought: I've occasionally seen people post both video and audio links for the same song, like YouTube and SoundCloud.

This is ideal from my listener/viewer perspective and I would think from the artist's as well: a happy listener might return to become a viewer of a song they've already heard and liked, for a totally deluxe, personally customizable experience.

Remember, sometimes you can't play a video to listen, like while driving a car.

I've been thinking about this question quite a bit and the thoughts get quite interesting, to me at least.

The first issue is whether what I do matches what I think I do, or even what I think I should do.
I also cast my mind back to what I did when selecting music on vinyl or CD.

The first thing I should say is that if someone has gone to the time and effort to make a video, I should at least watch it whilst I listen to the music. Even a simple fading images video can be a lot of work and presumably is there as part of the message.

If I'm searching for music, I'm most likely to do so on YouTube, so some kind of video is there, even if it's just a single image of an album cover. I do also tend to favour live music, where a video is pretty much de-facto, though sometimes audio and/or video can be appalling.

I don't actually use a streaming service, perhaps because some, at least, try to pigeon-hole my musical tastes and they don't easily pigeon-hole.

When looking through posting in these fora, I generally follow whatever link it is and get video or not as was posted.

When I bought vinyl/CDs regularly, I would look at the cover to see if it seemed interesting ... if someone thought about what they'd done; I'd look at the artistes/band and members; I'd look at the producer, I'd look at the label, is this interesting/new/different/intriguing/something-else?. Generally if two or three of those things all piqued my interest, I'd likely part with my money. Generally I'd do this by browsing a music store, usually in the Jazz or World or miscellaneous sections. I stopped doing it when stores went simply alphabetical. Too may albums for too few "looks interesting" opportunities ... I want to explore, not just see more of the same.

I have to say that by following that approach, I've only occasionally been disappointed and I've sometimes been thrilled. No nice surprises without some risk!

Where I generally dislike videos is where the music is secondary to the video, the soundtrack to the video, muzak.

HTH.

I am going to have to amend my original response.

If given a choice I will listen and not watch. If not given a choice I will view the video.

I do like Bud's videos and a couple of other's videos, CRS strikes again as I can't remember their names. I like videos that relate to the song and/or when a guitarist is playing something that I might like to learn.

But my main thing is to listen to the music.

Listen. I only watch if I am trying to learn a new lick.

Though, I do post my music as both. Most of my Facebook friends want the video. I am not camera shy - I just don't care for watching a music video.

If given a choice between listening to a Song posted on SoundCloud, or the same Song posted anywhere else...
I'll always choose anywhere else... if I can decrease the likelihood of being assaulted by the #%$*^&% commercial advertisements on HoundCloud.

If I like the music, then a video can be like ketchup on the side, or maybe, a fine wine.
