I just started working out again and after a workout yesterday I went to rehearse and my fingers were like a bunch of hot dogs laying on the fretboard. They wouldn't do anything I wanted them to. And my playing just sounded terrible I don't know if I stretched some muscles I didn't want to or what. anyone else have an experience like this? Anyone know of a remedy? ..I have gigs coming up...Thanks

Jeff,
Not sure if you have been playing a lot or even a little before this happened to you but I know that if I layoff awhile (talking even 2-3 days) I have similar issues. If this is what happened to you the cure is to play some everyday, even if it is for just 10 minutes or so.
Now with age (that's me) come joint issues, so what I do before every gig is run warm/hot water over my hands for a few minutes before I kick off my first tune. Heck used to be just a shot of Jack and I was bounding on stage starting a count in as I did so . . . now it's a trip to the restroom to wash out the eyes, clear the throat, loosen the finger joints, spray a little throat spray and meander on stage. My how the times have changed, but all in all I am still very grateful I can still "git er done", even if it is at a slower pace.

If you're talking free weights and playing guitar, then I can tell you from experience that the two don't mix well. Because you have to grip the bars so hard to stabilize the weight, then your guitar playing will suffer tremendously. You will end up having to choose between lifting and playing guitar.
If you use machines instead of free weights, the machines will stabilize the weight and you can lift with your palms partially open, reducing the gripping force and this will be better on your hands. You will also need to lower the resistance.
I used to work out a lot and found that my playing was taking a hit. I had to move to machines and back off quite a bit in order to do both.

Back when I played for a living I used to wake up in the morning with my hand and fingers stiff and aching. My wifie used to have to massage my hands and fingers so I could play again that night. Luckily we only played 4 nights a week but we played 6 hours a night. So my fingers got a lot of work out. Now my fingers are just weak from not playing at all. I really have to get back into playing both my bass and my guitars.

Thanks for the news..I was using bands but doing curls where I was putting a lot of wrist in to it. I think in the future I'll just keep my forearms straight...Yesterday I soaked my hands in hot water and played scales for about 20 min before digging into the rehearsal. seemed to help....yeah that can put the fear of God into a guy. whipping out the guitar only to find your fingers don't work:)

What I do in blending the two is take a tennis ball and place it on the tips of my fingers. With the thumb naturally opposed to the other four fingers I press each finger tip singly into the ball against the pressure of the thumb. This actually builds strength in the tendens of your fingers. Because while lifting weights you are heavily relying on your larger muscle groups, the smaller ones are more involved in working in tandem to get the thrust needed. This exercise I found isolates just those muscle groups needed to play guitar. As a result, for me, it keeps my fingers working independantly and thus able to be limber for fret play.
The reason for the finger tip just below the nail is because it takes more agility to balance the ball while doing this.
