I`m fooling or not.......
I made a playback on "nothing compares..." in the Sinhead O`Connor version....original is F as you know.
Growing older, I have to transpose it down- took D.
I handed out the piano in midi, also the string track. When transposing to D, the strings follow the transposition, the piano doesn`t!
What happens........

Also, I added the drums on the real drum track with the typical bassdrum and snare, that comes in at measure 15, but sadly can`t save it with the song! So I forced the real drums change into midi...added bass and snare...even they won`t be saved, also it`s midi now.
Would need another spare track for the choirs too...but sadly limited to 5 real and 2 customer tracks...
No way to get more tracks without changing to a DAW?

Tell us more about how you know it cannot be saved. An error message perhaps? You made the change from a MIDI style to a Real Track style perhaps? What steps did you take to save the files (File > Save, File > Save Special, use the drop zone etc)? Was anything frozen? That sort of information could take the guess work out of trying to suggest what may have caused your issue.

If your drum track is not changing to another RealDrum track, does the name of the RealDrum you want to change to have an N/A in its name?

If you go to Options | Preferences | RealDrums, in this window there are checkboxes to Enable RealDrums, and to Substitute RealDrums for MIDI drums. You could go here to make sure these boxes are checked.

The 2020 and earlier versions of Band-in-a-Box have a limited number of available tracks in the mixer. But the 2021 and higher versions have 16 additional Utility tracks that could be used to add many more instruments.

Thanks a lot for the replies!
I use 2016 ultra pak

I tried many things...

adding drums in real track....works well, but couldn`t be saved this way
changing real drums in a midi.......right click drums...force midi track...I only get a "midi patch 2" that`s ok so far, but even doesn`t save.....
didn`t try Options...will try out after

No error messages....saved, then loaded the song again and manually added drums were missing......didn`t save "special", took the usual way: save song as....
tried freezing and without freezing....didn`t help....

If it`s impossible, ok, but would be nice if possible, can`t get a newer version for retiring on low level.

How are you editing your RealDrum tracks? In your 2016 version, RealDrums and RealTracks cannot be edited in the Notation window or PianoRoll because these tracks are made from Audio. Only MIDI tracks follow edits in the notation.

What is the build for 2016 that you're using when you go to Help | About Band-in-a-Box as well so that we have that info also?

Sorry, Chantelle, it can. Some "real tracks" windows show the notes played in the tracks in piano roll, some don`t, but they can be edited- for the moment, but not beeing saved! I was wondering, but it is fact! So I thought, this "must" get stored too.....but doesn`t.

The built is 2016, had only 2015 real band included- so it seems to be an early version-, so I updated it with the patch for 2016. It`s an original factory hard drive version, not a download or update/upgrade a. s. o.
Worse than the saving prob is that the piano track doesn`t transpose! If there was a "select all" possibility, it would be easyer to hand it out, but I got to go through the whole song selecting and then transpose manually! Works, but would ask for!

Thanks so far, seems I got to live with this.

You actually can't edit RealTracks or RealDrums in that way. RealTracks and RealDrums are actual "audio recordings" of live performances by musicians.

Some of these have also been manually transcribed to show the relevant notation of the performance, but making changes to that does not reflect back to adjust the pre-recorded audio.

In later versions, you can substitute MIDI in place of RealTracks/RealDrums in parts, but not in the version you have.

I hope this explains why your changes are not being saved.

Audio track
Thanks, but I edited that way, for the moment, it works, means it plays the edited drums, the originals are not affected, just the manually are added. I see, it doesn`t save.....

But what about the missing transposing in the one part of the added piano on "melody part".....while the added strings on "soloist part" are transposed?
Tried out several times, didn`t transpose the one on "melody".

I´ve looked at the video....
I do a different way....also don`t have 2021 version...

Try to explain:

I just open the drum track in piano roll and add the wanted drum - kick and snare in the actual song-
for it is not throughout the same, I go through the whole song manually and add the differences in snare, which lead to a chorus or whatever....
It works for the moment you do it....if I would save a wav.file, think it would save this too... but I´m experimenting in different variations of styles, so would have been nice to keep the added drums...or whatever one changes.
Its funny...

The editing features in the notation window and the PianoRoll are always "available" which can cause some confusion. As AudioTrack mentioned, if you edit notes here and the name of your track is green in the mixer, then it will not follow any edits that were made. You would notice if you erase all notes in the PianoRoll for a RealTrack that it will still play afterwards.

There are a few ways to transpose in Band-in-a-Box. Which area of the program are you going to?

If you want to transpose your whole song, click the key signature at the top of the screen and select your new key. If you wish to change your key in the middle of a song, right click a bar and go to Bar Settings. In this dialog you can change the key at the specific bar. More options for transposition are found under Edit | Transpose.

Here is also a tutorial video on "transposing from to": https://youtu.be/AbRuFD2xxN8

"then it will not follow any edits that were made"........... it does, sorry, it`s a fact, but can`t be saved, even if frozen. The original is not beeing affected by this, only "new" beats are added. Sometimes they stay, sometimes expire.

I transpose usually in the main menue.."edit/transpose"..xy semitones..set a minus in the dialog box if necessary. If a transpose(shift)in the song is needed,I might manually go for it or as described. The thing is, the "melody" ( for this song "piano") part stays untransposed.

I’ve been following this thread and you are getting good advice. I think any confusion may be from the fact that we do not yet know which of your tracks are MIDI and which are audio (RealTracks and RealDrums). For example, the string part has a high probability of being MIDI.

Chantelle pointed out that if the name of the track in the mixer is the color green, it’s audio. For audio, if there is notation, it’s only for educational purposes and editing it is not going to change what you hear. It will also be overwritten every time you regenerate.

No confusion.....
as I wrote, the drums are "real drums"-green. I can add kick and snare- or whatever- but not save it with the song.

The strings and the piano are midi- melody and soloist-...the strings transpose, the piano doesn`t.

The RealDrum behavior sounds normal. The failure of the piano on the Soloist track to transpose sounds like a bug, for which I recommend you try Live Chat with a Support staffer from PG Music.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
