New Day (on SoundCloud) A meditative piano instrumental in a folky/jazz style. A simple composition using bass, piano, drums. This is the second movement of a "Song of Flight" suite I wrote last year. Meant to invoke scenes of migratory sandhill cranes rising up from a Nebraska river, heading southwards. The first movement self-titled "Song of Flight" was set to video and posted on this forum roughly a year ago. This second movement mainly uses the same chord progression, but the resulting "melody" is quite different. Instruments used: Bass: BIAB RealBass 2527 Piano: Midi from corresponding RealChart of BIAB RealPiano 890 (Miles Black), using Native Instruments Noire virtual piano. Drums: I played this virtually using a jazz kit from Addictive Drums 2. Mixed and mastered in Cakewalk by Bandlab. The piano arpeggio "melody" came from careful and painstaking curating of RealTrack phrases and arpeggios. I chose not to use the RealTrack audio directly because it wasn't possible to get rid of the pops and clicks between some phrases, and also because I wanted a smoother, jazzier sound out of the piano. Though I've been a drummer for over 50 years, I've not used the Bossa Nova rhythm much before. So I had a lot of fun with melding that rhythm to what is otherwise a folky piano style.

Yeah, I listened first then came back here to tell you I really like the way the drums and piano play together with their own style. I thought maybe you played piano, but then came to READ your post. You created some interesting chord changes. Well done!

Nice melody and good sound. I'm new to this mixing stuff and haven't got it down well at all, but I like what hear from you here.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments.
As the piano part was being developed, I created sheet music for it as well. I tried playing that sheet music, and it was beyond my abilities. I'm not much of a piano player -- yet, though I've dabbled with it all my life. Something to strive for.

All of the cymbals seem a little loud to me but you're the drummer and know better. Pleasant piece.

BryMusic:
A beautiful opening with that wonderful piano, which then carries this song on through. Like the shift in panning on the drums (or so it seems to me)—very effective, though I’m wondering whether the drums can come down in the mix just a tad . . . but maybe not. On the whole, a very sweet instrumental. Well done!
Best regards,
Deej

Lovely track Bryan. Piano was excellent. I agree with Ray on the cymbals. Just could be pulled back a bit. Very cool overall tho.

Your opening description of 'meditative' sits perfectly with the delivery.
The drum kit comes through sweet and crisp and the cymbals really sing.
All around this is a very nice composition. Quality throughout.

Nice! Excellent composition for the piano part, and a treat hearing a real drummer in the mix, there is only one other drummer on the forum I think. Looking forward to hearing more from you

Cranes are very nice inspiration for the song and I can imagine the scene through your instrumental. Upbeat and uplifting melody. The piano arpeggio carries the song like the big bird wings. Smooth mix.
BTW. Sandhill cranes are rarely seen here in Finland, last year one was seen in the north and hundreds of bird-watchers went to see it.
