New Day (on SoundCloud)

A meditative piano instrumental in a folky/jazz style. A simple composition using bass, piano, drums.

This is the second movement of a "Song of Flight" suite I wrote last year. Meant to invoke scenes of migratory sandhill cranes rising up from a Nebraska river, heading southwards. The first movement self-titled "Song of Flight" was set to video and posted on this forum roughly a year ago. This second movement mainly uses the same chord progression, but the resulting "melody" is quite different.

Instruments used:

Bass: BIAB RealBass 2527

Piano: Midi from corresponding RealChart of BIAB RealPiano 890 (Miles Black), using Native Instruments Noire virtual piano.

Drums: I played this virtually using a jazz kit from Addictive Drums 2.

Mixed and mastered in Cakewalk by Bandlab.

The piano arpeggio "melody" came from careful and painstaking curating of RealTrack phrases and arpeggios. I chose not to use the RealTrack audio directly because it wasn't possible to get rid of the pops and clicks between some phrases, and also because I wanted a smoother, jazzier sound out of the piano.

Though I've been a drummer for over 50 years, I've not used the Bossa Nova rhythm much before. So I had a lot of fun with melding that rhythm to what is otherwise a folky piano style.
