That gave me a laugh.
As a teacher I insisted children use may rather than can when asking for permission to do something.
Once they'd learnt that lesson I'd confound them when they'd come to me as a pair of group and begin "May we..." I'd interrupt them and ask why they were speaking to me in French OR I'd listen and respond to their question with "Mais oui!" Eventually they learnt other ways to ask or deal with me.
I'm a sad case.
