Thanks, Scott. The panning in the drums is how the BIAB track renders (so kudos to PGMusic)

Well crafted lyrics that resonates in so many ways. Nicely shaped in a soft story telling tune. Vocals, arrangement and production are PRO level. Listens very well. Good one. Thank you for sharing.

Misha.

Thanks for that, Misha....

Everything about this song is excellent . . the lyric, vocals, band, production, arrangement and mix. And the wonderful artwork.

The introduction of both the organ and the banjo were especially nice.

Your ability to choose RT's/RD's and mix them to sound like a well honed group of studio guys and gals is unparalleled. Amazing.

"you're mired in mere mediocrity
you miss the message most of the time
it takes more than you've managed to muster
to be a master of reason and rhyme"
Mmmmm ... we are wonderfully alliterated!

My friend got these lines in his dream: "you call me average but you are just mean". I hope to write a song around that idea. Your song, however, is not average, mean or mediocrity, but well produced and excellent handling of the subject with clever lyrics (although I like also mediocre, non-polished and less mastered works if they deliver the message). Good groove, enjoyable selection of instruments, excellent mix, great singing - very nice nuances in your voice.

You have, apparently...missed the point.
This is not about my "fellow musicians and writers".
(there is no reference to "musicians" at all.
"Reason and rhyme" don't have any musical meaning.)

I have the utmost respect for writers - both those who have reached a pro level and those who continue to try to improve to ultimately approach that level (or even if they do not - as long as they are willing to continue to learn)
It is about a very specific kind of person...
A writer who is so sure they know what they are doing - when they obviously do not - that they are not ever going to improve because they believe they are "already there".
You have to admit a deficiency before you can address it.
(That doesn't stop them from bragging about their writing abilities at a drop of a hat).
A small population.

Sorry I haven't been on lately but I've been working on a project and, frankly, this forum is way too large for me to keep up with all the new offerings. I don't know how some of you do it. I'll still post but I just can't comment on all the new songs, etc.

I always enjoy your work, including this one.

Thanks, Sean. The place is getting bigger all the time - a good thing. But, you are right - it takes more and more effort to "keep up".

Boys, I'm gonna help y'all here because I AM the master of reason and rhyme in downtown Nashville today and my name is Tater Totts.

I just read these lyrics over the phone to my Nashville buddies and they told me I was one of a kind. Never to be imitated, never to be beaten. And I think they are right.

So, I wrote the beginning of a song so you fellers can make some peace. There ain't one word of maudlin Dan Folgelberg mediocrity in my song. Hell no. All there is is this: straight up country genius from a man who knows what he's doing, and who knows what the ladies want to hear. Also, I know how to strap on a Tele and turn up the dial on a Twin. Y'all might want to try that sometime.

I want you boys to finish this and record it together and get yourselves a damned hit for God's sake because all this nonsense is driving me crazy and I have some serious hard-core drinking and songwriting to do.

Finish it out:

Arms Too Short
By Tater Totts

V1

Two men walked into a bar
Fighting for a song
So much blood on a bar room floor
I can’t tell who was wrong
I thought of redneck music
Back from yesterday
George Strait, and Hank, and Jerry
And that chubby boy Conway
Maybe it was 1969
But it don’t matter anyway

CH

Cause your arms
Too short to box with God
Just shut up and do what I say
With your stubby little fingers
You’ll never learn to play
And you’ll never get my message anyway

V2

Ah yes, a "man in the mirror" song. I see so much self doubt in this song. Let me give you some advice, don't be so hard on yourself. Maybe just be hard on yourself. I'm with you, and agree it's warranted to an extent.

Are you, by your own admission "mired in mediocrity?" Of course! But that doesn't have to be a total negative. Maybe look at it as you're the top of the bottom, or the bottom of the top. The cream of the crap! If there are 300 active song-writers on this forum, you would be better than maybe 150 of 'em. You've got a gift. A gift like tube socks on Christmas morning. Sure they may not be exciting and possibly misshapen but...I thought I had more of a thought there. Nope. That was the whole thought. Anyway, pretty soon those socks will be forgotten.

I know you had a lot to say in this song because you felt the need to. I said a lot about the song and you personally because I felt the need to.

So your songs are right in there with other mediocre names like Don Schiltz, Paul/John, Elton/Bernie, or Natalie Humby. You even have a bit of a Ronnie Dunn thing going on. Is this bad? Well, it's not great, and that's ok.

Even the album cover had me just kind of starring for a good length of time just lost in it. I don't need feelings and thoughts getting all stirred up. No one likes be lost Floyd. No one. Art does not belong on an album cover.

Anyway...I totally loved every aspect of the song. No surprise on one hand but surpassed my expectations on the other. Showing a songwriter who thinks they are a master of everything in the realm of song what a masterly written and produced song is by writing a song about it...knowing it's probably lost on them...I found brilliant.

Made my day the day I heard it and many days since. Thanks for sharing this exception song!

Ya know.... you're gonna confuse some folks with that one.
Dissin' my album cover???? Unforgivable...
You are writing in circles, I think...
"You've got a gift. A gift like tube socks on Christmas morning." ...I'm already writing this one... (I'll add you as a co-writer, of course)
Thanks for all the good stuff. And for all the clever/funny stuff, too!!!

I'm a little late to this one. I'm just getting caught up.

This is one of those tunes that sticks with you after the song is over.

You show you verbal dexterity with this.

Hi Floyd,

Almost missed this song. That would have been a shame.
Such a good song, very nice acoustic guitar and lead guitar.
But the best are your lyrics and vocals!
And I learned a new word: hackneyed!

And I liked that story from Marty and his friend about you and your songs!

Nice day,
Hans

Sorry Floyd, I'm extremely late to the party here! I know the lyrics are definitely pointed, (I don't know where) but they sure are clever and really captivate the listener! The mix on this track really got my attention! It doesn't get any better! T
