Well Happy Good Friday and Easter everybody! Some good music around here this week!! Keep up the good work all!

I have a few things here, because I do not want to clutter the board, so I will explain.

My new song is called Heartless, and as with all my new songs I post the first draft and mix soon after writing here to get your feedback before I do a final mix.

You all were a great help on Whiskey Town. I sent it to some industry pros in Nashville, and got really rave reviews, but they said what you said: Hey dude, for the love of God please tune up those vocals and the mix is way too busy! So, I remixed it. What is below is what I will now enter in a contest.

The new one is hot off the press, and once I have your gut-wrenching comments, I will remix. That is my process!

HEARTLESS
By David Snyder

V1

If you ask my opinion
God doesn't ask that much
just try and make a difference
in every life you touch
Everybody in the world is hurt
and they need a friend
it's really not all that hard to understand

CH

You might have got drunk
you might have been fried
you might have been really messed up inside
it doesn't mean
you're going to hell
but if you were heartless
If you were heartless
it ain't gonna go that well

V2

If you ask my opinion
everybody's got it rough
you work and you fight and try
it's never good enough
The only way to win is love
and then love some more
I can promise you someone
is damned sure keeping score

CH

You might have got drunk
you might have been fried
you might have been really messed up inside
it doesn't mean
you're going to hell
it doesn't mean you're going to hell
but if you were heartless
If you were heartless
it ain't gonna go that well

Bridge

You know God weighs the heart
of every woman and man
and all God expects you to do is the best you can
but if you hurt the way you've been hurt
it comes back on you
and you know every single word of this is true

CH

You might have got drunk
you might have been fried
you might have been really messed up inside
it doesn't mean
you're going to hell
it doesn't mean
you're going to hell
but if you were heartless
If you were heartless
it ain't gonna go that well

If you ask my opinion God doesn't ask that much
yeah if you ask my opinion
God doesn't ask that much

Hey there David, looks like I'm going to be the first to reply. I'm afraid I'm not much help because I'm still trying to learn this mixing stuff myself. I too like to hear the vocals stand out. As for the song in general, I like it. I think it has kind of a John Meloncamp feel to it. It's got a nice message. I'm not sure it's entirely theologically correct, but I don't think that was your focus and you weren't trying for a worship song. It's got a good sound to it though. Good luck on your upcoming contest.

Hey Brad,

Thanks! I appreciate that. Let me share a thought on the "theology."

When I am reading the Bible I see Jesus was pretty quick to forgive just about anyone for anything in a jiffy.

However, for those he described as "heartless"--mean, judgmental, hateful, overly religious, punishing and selfish--well, he called them the spawn of Satan. And he said they were going to fry.

So, in that sense, I think the theology is not that far off man.

Happy Easter!!!!

David,
Heartless is heartfelt.
Theology or astrology: all ologies need to offer an apology when the miss the analogy and fight for literality.
Good song, vocals need to come up a little and have the strident edge knock off a little.
I like the anvil like chime of the guitar on the right in the verses it hammers home the message (sorry).
Cool.

Whiskey Town...there's an oddity at 1.01 when one of the panned riffing guitars appears in the centre for a bar then moves back...it sort of made sense because there was a gap in the melody but it was a bit loud & it wasn't repeated in the same areas later leaving me to doubt it's placement.
I THINK I'd pull those heavier riffing guitars back a tiny bit to let your voice have a little more space.

Cheers

Nice one, David, very well written lyrics and lots of passion in the performance.

I think the vox could come up a little, couple of db maybe? Other than that, track sounds good.

David,

Great song and great vocal. I really like the track selection here - gives it a driving rock sound.

Excellent!

Not hard to understand but sadly thousands of years have seen but sporadic relatively short lived outbreaks of it.

We agree with the aforementioned notion to up vocal ... perhaps 1-2 db.

Good one!

Clear message represented in guaranteed David Snyder quality, definitely not a heartless song. Guitar groove works very well and the choir adds nice gospel mood, I would bring them forward a bit to give them more presence.

Dang! Mr. Snyder!

A really well written song. LOVED it!!

Cool BAND/production. Kind of Abbey-Road-Beatles meet Blood-On-The-Tracks-Dylan. Does it get any better than that? I don't think so...

I like the mix. It has a band-in-the-studio-live-one-take sound. Perfect for the song.

One of your best (in a long line of GOOOOOOD stuff).

A big WOW for ya on this one!

Hi David,

I always hear Bob Dylan when hearing you sing. I like that, although I had to get used to his vocals years ago. But yours goes very well with it!
But you seem to hide them in this song. Others on the forum said it too. Bring your vocals much more upfront. Your fantastic lyrics need to be heard better!

Happy Eastern,
Hans

Wow, Dave, this is superior, man. Good write, and I love the lyrics. Outstanding production and mix. Everything ingredient stirs in the same pot and comes out so tasty. I like the addition of the OOZE.

Enjoy whatever happens!

On Heartless, thanks Ray.

On Whiskey, thanks again. I found that glitch you spotted. It was weird. It was in an automation envelope in Cakewalk but not apparent, and seemingly without cause. I had to re-do it. Strange.

But good ears man. You were right.

I am actually hearing both songs for the very first time and I can hear some distinct differences "mix wise".

Whiskey Town Remix sounds much fuller, brighter, louder, and most importantly, it has more dynamics. I really like this one!

Can you give Heartless the same treatment, and then repost?

Well done!

I think there's a couple of spots where the prosody is a little awkward, but the lyrics sound heartfelt.

"...the prosody is a little awkward..." is a little like saying your chromosome is frayed.
Such a word, encompassing so, so much, and so frequently used, ought to be followed with just hint or two as to which, amongst the many, aspect is/are referred to.

Prosody in music refers how a composer sets text to a melody.

Lyrics are easier to sing if the rhythm and melody more closely match that of normal speech patterns.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
