That punch in icon can be hard to find. It is also easy to forget you have it enebled. I try to use it minimally because of this and instead do the old 'record to another track then assemble a finished one' routine that you mentioned in your original post. I hate telling the vocalist "Oops I forgot to turn the Punch-In off" when I change tracks or move to the end where I think it's empty. One reason may be that I am certifiably color deficient in certain color spectrums, and the icons as they now exist are not obvious to me when enabled/disabled. I wish the enabled punch in would flash or something!
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
