This song started coming together when I was very sick. I had a tumor, blood clots, and other cancer complications in my mid and upper chest. The congestion began crushing my larynx causing me to lose my voice and not be able to speak above a whisper. Fluid was escaping into my chest cavity, collapsing my lungs, making it very difficult to breathe. I had lost the ability to walk, and could only stand with assistance. I was circling the drain, and a couple of doctors had already given up and said I wasn't going to make it. Fortunately, others wouldn't quit and I eventually pulled through. I had a whole new perspective on life and knew heaven certainly was getting closer every day. So knowing that I only had a limited number of words, breaths, and steps before that day would come, I began thinking about what I wanted to do with them - and then these lines started coming into my mind...

https://soundcloud.com/user-722422510/heavens-getting-closer Heaven's Getting Closer

With every breath I take I’m lifting you in praise. With every step I make I’m stepping out in faith.
With every prayer I pray I renew my strength. I will run and not be weary. I will walk and not be faint,
because on eagles wings, Lord you lift me up. When I’m feeling weak you fill me with love.
And it’s your face I seek, you wipe my tears away, and Heaven’s getting closer every single day.

Heaven’s getting closer every single day. Oh glory Hallelujah, Lord don’t hesitate.
‘cause we’re going to see our savior face to face, when you come to take us all away.
Yeah, Heaven’s getting closer every single day. It’s got me feeling like a kid that just can’t wait,
But the waiting’s getting shorter, soon the waiting will be over
‘cause Heaven’s getting closer every single day.

With every word I say, Lord I will proclaim that you’re the King of Glory who forever reigns
‘cause you died on the cross to save all who were lost, but on the third day you came out of that grave and set the captives free and that included me. Now who I was is just a memory.
You made me brand new, old things passed away, and Heaven’s getting closer every single day.

Heaven’s getting closer every single day. Oh glory Hallelujah, Lord don’t hesitate.
‘cause we’re going to see our savior face to face, when you come to take us all away.
Yeah, Heaven’s getting closer every single day. It’s got me feeling like a kid that just can’t wait,
But the waiting’s getting shorter, soon the waiting will be over
‘cause Heaven’s getting closer…

With every breath I take. With every step I make. With every prayer I pray. With every word I say.
With every breath I take. With every step I make. With every prayer I pray, well I renew my strength.
With every breath I take. With every step I make. Oh Heaven’s getting closer every single day

Oh the days are getting shorter, soon the waiting will be over
‘cause Heaven’s getting closer every single day.
Yeah Heaven’s getting closer every single day.

I'm sorry this is another I did before my hard drive broke, so it wasn't mixed in stereo and I'm sure there are other problems as well. Please let me know about them anyway so I can learn to make the necessary changes in future recordings. I did the music and vocals except for the dobro, banjo (Biab) and a great friend of mine did the bass back vocal. Neither of us realized that his "this is fun" comment was recorded until I listened much later. I decided I just had to keep it.

Dobro: Biab, Wanda Vick
Banjo: Biab, Pat McGrath

Wow... what a remarkable story... You are blessed to have pulled through..

I listened to your song and would recommend bringing up the rhythm section a bit... (drums bass & guitar)

Dobro may be a little loud, but the Banjo seems just right...

It sounds like you have been to hell and back! I am glad that you made it back!

Strong vocals with a great message in those lyrics

I also think the mix could be a little better by bringing up the band's volume

Super song

Brad...I love this song but I love your testimony even more...what an ordeal...I guess He wasn't through with you or maybe He was just getting started with you.

I think the vocals are great (love that bass by Shawn) But the band is kinda not there and I know what it's like not to have the master tracks any more because your computer gave up the ghost...this song needs a driving band behind it...there are software programs that can rip the vocals off of completed tracks...most of the songs I've posted on this forum are older songs of mine that were finished at one time with no individual tracks left to remaster so I rip the vocals off of those songs and redo the tracks with BiaB tracks...no kidding almost all the songs of mine on here were done that way...I use Steinberg SpectraLayers 8.

It can be done...I figured these songs deserve another shot at life...just like you did!!

This is a cool song Brad.

I think there could be a version two where you chose some of the very best words from this and made it a praise and worship song, slow and repetitive, like a Hillsong song. (But with less words, and some really hooky refrains.) There are a lot of Praise and Worship styles in BIAB that do this very well.

Do you know what I mean?

Here are some folks who do this kind of thing very well also. I have this site bookmarked.

Hi, Brad.

Lucky for us they pulled you from the brink!

Good song - I especially love the vocals! That and the dobro really make it shine.

If you're looking to extract the parts, you might also check out Spleeter, which is a free application on which tools like SpectraLayers are based. You can find a thread about it here.

You're right, Brad. "This is fun." Man, you gotta get a copy of this to those doctors who didn't know how to fix you. I'm so glad the others kept at it, man. This is such a good song, and all your vocals are perfect. Such outstanding lyrics. The whole song is a wonderful message to all. Thanks, Brad!

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks David. I've been pressed for time in a lot of areas lately, so I've not been able to spend much time on music. I really need to check this stuff out. When I finally do, I may be hitting you up for help!

Brad,

That is quite the story! A real ordeal! Glad you got through it...

A good rockin' Gospel number. Nice vocals. I like the dobro, too.

As others have noted, the drums could be louder to give it even more punch.

Good one.

We are all so glad that you pulled through such a terrible situation and we have no doubt that it did give you a new perspective and inspiration for more songs.

This has a good arrangement and very nice harmonies and counterpoint singing. The dobro was a real treat too!

Enjoyed it,
J&B

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.

The 2026 49-PAK is loaded with other great new add-ons as well. Learn more about the 2026 49-PAK!
