In this instance an easy workaround would be to connect a standard desktop usb keyboard. Many laptops use a trackpad instead of a mouse. Since most mouses have a scroll wheel but trackpads do not you lose use of the scroll wheel too. Here again the answer is a desktop usb mouse. If you connect a wireless keyboard and mouse, they could be placed on a stand or table away from the laptop.
