This seems to me like a daunting technical challenge but I've been amazed by software before.

Can anyone recommend a tool that can extract the chords from an audio file such as MP3?

Can BiaB do this?

If so and to demonstrate it's capability would you apply it to this song and share your results?

Thanks in advance.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Of couse BIAB will do it with the ACW. I also have Riffstation which was a gold standard for years. I would be glad to get you the chords but the song you link to is not permitted to be downloaded? Can you adjust that first.

Hmmmm, I have it set to "Public" and don't see what else I can do to make it downloadable. Suggestions?

Are you able to play it and have your DAW record it real-time?

Maybe you need to put it on DropBox or a similar file sharing service and share a link to the file?

Ya I could if I really wanted to work at it, but I was hoping it would be simpler than that. I use soundcloud a lot and I think there is an option be allow it to be "downloadable". Otherwise, what AudioTrack said...

By the way, Google Drive is free and very functional.

Here's a single run through with the ACW on my system. I didn't do the whole 6+ minutes of the song.

This is a single ACW run from a download of the compressed audio of the link.

I just ran it through chordify and got this:

https://chordify.net/chords/a-summertime-long-ago-bassthumper

If a song is on the Internet, it can usually pull it up and "chordify" it for you. It is not that much per year and very handy if you do this a lot.

I think you get a few for free, so bassthumper you will probable be able to see this. With this paid version you can download midis and pdfs which for me is super handy.

@ Music Student: I also love RiffStation and have used it a lot, but am someone annoyed I can find no way to "export" the chord sheet, or anything like that, once it does an analysis. That leaves you to sit there and manually write chords on a scratch pad. Did I miss something? Is there a button I overlooked??? smile I don't see what they didn't think we might want a chord export.

Oh, and yes ACW in BIAB is awesome as well. I use whatever I can find on some charts, and between the three find what I am looking for.

RiffStation is old indeed. I originally got a free copy presented to me by no other than Jennifer Batten. By the way, I don't think I ever shared that here. Nor how I met Fall Out Boy! grin

By todays standards is does look very limited. Here is an example of how we used it. Ya, scratch pad just like I used to do it too....

Hey Charlie, thanks for your efforts too.
Maybe I should try ACW, from what I can see from your screenshot its chords are close.
Of course I can't tell how close (sonically) until I listen to it.

Ah Yes, good old Jennifer Batten!

I took a master class with her and got some cool freebies as well.

She also sent me the audition videos she did for Michael Jackson. With her big hair and big glasses. (She admitted she was the biggest nerd in her high school glass.)

Apparently, Michael Jackson said: "Don't worry, I'm going to give you a makeover." She said he was totally in charge of her look and oversaw everything--maybe even did her hair!!!

She also said he was one of the nicest human beings she has ever met.

So, sitting in his personal makeup chair, she went from biggest nerd, to.....

Bass Thumper,

Strange. I didn't load a video, I just entered your soundcloud link to that song and it "chordified" it.

Maybe you just have to create a free account or something and then click the link?

BT,

Maybe it was trying to pull up my account since I am a subscriber.

Dunno.

Try just going here:

https://chordify.net/

in the search bar, if it lets you, just paste your soundcloud url and you should see it pull up.

It is already "chordified."

I don't know what else to suggest. Sorry.

I've used ACW a few times. Sometimes it just flat out nails it and other times.... it's not that close. I was using it to create a few tracks to an original song someone had sent me that I was planning on using BB/RB to create a few instrument tracks.... all I can say is... it didn't even get close enough for rock and roll. I had to scrap everything I was doing trying to get it to work for the last 2 hrs..... and start over entering the chords manually into the grid. That only took me about 15 minutes or so.

In actuality, I rarely have a need to use ACW. But it will work on the vast majority of songs.
