Someone To Watch Over Me

Someone To Watch Over Me is one of Janice’s favorite songs and in the public domain in the US and around the world.
The song was composed by George Gershwin in 1926 with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, assisted by Howard Dietz who penned the title. It was written for the musical Oh, Kay!, with the part originally sung on Broadway by English actress Gertrude Lawrence while holding a rag doll in a sentimental solo scene.

More than 1,800 (and 1) recordings of the song have been released, and has been covered by numerous popular artists, such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Linda Ronstadt.

There are numerous sheet music chord progressions and arrangements available on the internet.

Janice – Vocals & Arrangement (and speaking as a fan it's a superb vocal).
I played the guitar solos and fills and did the initial mix.
Bud – Recorded Janice and mastered the song.

The Band:
MIDI SuperTracks in song: ~~1916:Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Sw 085
MIDI SuperTracks in song: 1886:Piano, Solo-Accompaniment Bluesy12-8John Sw 060
RealTracks in style: ~555:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm Jazz Ballad Freddie Sw 085
RealTracks in song: ~1042:Organ, B3, Rhythm JazzBallad Sw 085
RealDrums in Song:Jazz#1: a: Jazz#1b: Jazz#1
I used a Kontakt Piano and acoustic bass for the MIDI instruments.

Someone To Watch Over Me

There's a saying old, says that love is blind
Still we're often told, seek and ye shall find
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind
Looking everywhere, haven't found him yet

He's the big affair I cannot forget
Only man I ever think of with regret
I'd like to add his initial to my monogram
Tell me, where is the shepherd for this lost lamb?

There's a somebody I'm longin' to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me

I'm a little lamb who's lost in the wood
I know I could always be good
To one who'll watch over me

Although he may not be
The man some girls think of as handsome
To my heart, he carries the key

Won't you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

I think you guys did a really nice job of putting your own spin on it to make it your own, and Janice's vocals as always are quite lovely! Thanks for showing off your projects with us!

Peter,

One of my very favorite oldies . . . and Janice knocks it out of the park on the vocal. Lovely arrangement and production as well. Love it!

Cheers!

Peter, Janice & Bud,
What is always said about anything from your collective holds true:
taste, talent and musicality makes for FABULOUSNESS.
AND the image attached is marvellous too - made me think of Janice as Dorothy after the initial connection with the song.

Cheers

Oh, my!!! Chills and thrills!! What an outstanding version, Peter. I, too, am a big Janice fan and she sings this as if the song was written for her. I'm also a big fan of yours, Peter, and your guitar work on this is superb. You know I'm a big Bud fan as well. He brings all of the elements together in the absolutely perfect mix. SO good. So good.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Peter and Janice,

Lovely cover of Gershwin's song.
Well done.

I love Gershwin. Rhapsody in Blue, an American in Paris, his songs, Porgy and Bess.
But most of all his concerto in F!

We didn't know it is allowed to cover his songs.
The information in the Netherlands is, that we are not allowed to cover American artists without permission unless they've been dead for a hundred years at least. In case of music originating from Europe this is 70 years.
This opens up some new possibilities for us!
Thanks for sharing.

In the US each January 1 is Public Domain Day and all songs from 96 years ago roll into the PD. So this year it was from 1926 and that is when this Gershwin song was written. Nothing he wrote after 1926 is yet in the PD. The US law changed several years ago as it was written so that only songs published to 1924 were PD. So they changed it to add another year each January 1. Next year in the US anything published in 1927 including songs, books, films, etc will enter the PD. I'm surprised that your law regarding the US is more strict than the US law ... which is one of the strictest if not the most in the world. Perhaps your source for the 100 year notion had not been updated when the US law changed.

And glad you liked it!

Janice & Bud

PS Here is an article from a US government site listing the song as PD

Thank you very much Ember! We were excited when the song entered the public domain this year. As Peter mentioned it has been a favorite of mine for many years.

Tough song to sing.
Janice outdid herself making it her own. You all put together a really nice different spin on it.

Really good guys, you took an old classic and made it your own.

Janice knocked it out of the park as per usual, and your guitar work on this is perfect.

Excellent, well done Janice, Peter, and Bud!

What a lovely treatment of this old song! Janice absolutely knocked it out of the park with the vocal on this! I really like that jazzy tone you used on guitar Peter! It's perfect for the genre! Bud, nobody could have done a better job with Janice's vocal than you did here! Enjoyed it!

Thanks, Torrey

I can honestly say I'm not a Gershwin fan.... but this is something that could possibly convince me otherwise.

You guys and gals gave this the royal treatment and made it new again.

Nice.
