i like to mix on speakers and then check on headphones. i simply plugged my phones into the phone output on the front panel and got sound - at least that's what used to happen. now i only get left hand channel. BIAB works fine - both channels using WAS. windows media player works fine with mp3s and wav files.
but RB doesn't. WAS and MME one channel only
plugging my uphoria usb interface in, the same with WAS and MME but using the dedicated uphoria driver i get both channels.
so it must be RB (mustn't it?) BIAB headphones work when plugged in, pull plug out, speakers back. windows media - plug phones in sound on both channels, pull plug out back to speakers.
i can use my phones with the uphoria asio driver and interface but in the past was quite happy to just plug the phones in and use the soundblaster.
inconvenient to drag the interface out and plug it in but its a workaround.
tried changing the soundblaster to exclusive/non exclusive. but as i say everythng works as it should do except RB.
and yes i tried a return to factory settings and no it can't be a loose plug or dmaged lead cos everything else works.
RB has always worked 'out of the box' but this has me totally baffled
and just plugged in my usb conference call headset and get both channels............

When you play RB, do both channels show signal in RB? Is it possible you accidentally enabled MONO in the RB mixer? Maybe your phones handle MONO in some weird way. Does RB play thru both speakers?
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but RB plays fine through the speakers - both left and right - but not through the phones. All other sound programs incl BIAB play fine through speakers and phones. And yes visual of both channels playing. It really makes no sense to me at all.

Bob. i might be wrong but it sounds like the problem might lie with whatever your plugging the phones into. what do you have the phones plugged into when this odd behaviour occurs ? soundblaster ?

you'd think so wouldn't you OM? but everything else - including BIAB - plays fine on speakers and then when i plug phones in the sound for both channels gets to the phones. i'm plugging the phones into the front case headphone socket and i get the motherboard popup that asks me to confirm i've plugged phones in.
so can't be the phones or the lead or the socket or the hardware - at least that's the conclusion I draw. and the fact that RB plays fine on speakers and on phones with the uphoria ASIO driver tends to suggest its not an RB setting.
maybe we'll never know.......... i can't think of anything else it might be but its purely an RB problem

Bob.
assuming your plugging the phones (which i'm assuming are pro studio phones with qtr inch male connector ?) into a mini jack of sb via a qtr inch to mini jack gizmo....are you ? and assuming youve unplugged and plugged into the sb jack input oodles of times over the years ...try this. just some ideas... 1. try a different set of eg dollar phones with mini jack male plugged into sb mini jack phone input...DO YOU NOW HEAR STEREO in the dollar phones ? AND //OR 2. make sure you seat into the sb phones input properly cos ive found with repeated use 'sometimes' mini jacks can be problematic with repeated/gazillions times of use. ie it might purely a sb jack prob.
if not above then i'm out of ideas. assuming your pro phones work in other gear.

resolved but i think we can write this one down to extra terrestrtial activity..........OM's suggestion was worth a try - yes its a mini jack on the front panel - and the cheapie headphones gave me both channels. then plugged in my quality phones and got both channels. but it still doesn't explain why all other sound programs worked with the quality headphones apart from RB. i could get BIAB on both left and right and then only left on RB with the phones plugged in and not moved or adjusted in any way...........
thanks OM and rharv for the suggestions but i think this goes in the same box as 'what happened to the Marie Celeste........'

thanks Mario. my phones have a double ended lead - normal size jack and a mini jack. to change you plug the other end into the phones. sounds odd but to use the mini jack you plug the normal sized jack into the phones and then the mini jack into the front panel of the pc. to use the normal jack with the uphoria i plug the mini jack into a socket on the other side of the phones and then the full size jack into the interface.
i still can't work out why BIAB played fine through phones and then without moving the plug, RB went to left channel only.

thanks OM and rharv for the suggestions but i think this goes in the same box as 'what happened to the Marie Celeste........' FWIW, headphone/headset jacks on PCs tend to have multiple connections and switches/sensors to signal to the electronics/software when something is plugged into the socket. There are quite a lot of little things that can play up. When I first read your description of the problem, it was my immediate thought, but further description pointed to something more software-ish ... maybe. I've had similar problems with 1/4" jack headphones with an adaptor ... weight pulls the mini-jack down and stresses the innards. All my recent headphones have a mini-jack with an adapter for 1/4".
Jazz relative beginner, starting at a much older age than was helpful. AVL:MXE Linux; Windows 11 BIAB2026 Audiophile, a bunch of other software. Kawai MP6, Ui24R, Focusrite Saffire Pro40 and Scarletts .

All my recent headphones have a mini-jack with an adapter for 1/4". I do the same thing, get headphones with a mini-jack on the end of the cord, and use an adapter up to the 1/4". That way it is much more likely the adapter ends up being the fail point, which is a whole lot less expensive than an interface .. Glad it seems to have resolved itself.

Bought one of these and patched it to my main out on interface, then plugged my monitors and headphones into it. Just dial in the volume on the one you want https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=615220

thanks for all the contributions but my current phones work just fine. whatever it was will remain a mystery and i'm convinced it wasn't hardware related.
i could plug my phones in and listen to BIAB using WAS and get both channels. then without moving the phones plug and leaving it just as it was, switch to RB using WAS and get just the left channel.
now it's all working fine as described above.
