Well this is not A day or B day or C day but D day.
Eh, and B are past, but the big C and the D day for chemo and radiation are Tuesday.

I don't ask for your prayers, unless you have a church where they all live to ripe older ages and have no health problems. As I see it, that sort of equals out. In fact they say don't say you pray for someone, because they don't help themselves.

So at 8 a.m. it's 5 hours of chemo. Platinum in the drug, I'm worth that much. Then radiation. Wow. 7 weeks, every day for the radiation and 6 weeks of Tuesdays with chemo.

I'm hoping to play the piano in the joint they have one. When I walked in I went pale and the wife says what's wrong, it was the first time. Some dude way playing badly, Green Green Grass of Home. That I would never play at a cancer place....Wrong words, wrong sentiment, wrong speed....

Oh well, picked the wrong month to take up singing....the throat turning to hamburger is scary....

Best of luck John, I sincerely hope this all works out for you. I know you have a positive mental attitude and a great sense of humor. Those two things can really help.

Our thoughts are with you John. I have a dear friend here that is going thru cancer treatment. Things are not looking good for him. I hope things look better for you. Keep that wonderful sense of humor, and lean on your loved ones. That is what life is all about.

Good luck John. You know you've got to hang in there: can't let that bad piano player ruining the show over there. You've got to step up and take over, rock that place!

I wish you and your wife strength in these upcoming period. Keep your chin up and keep us posted!

fyi...and i dunno if it will make you feel better.
but my dear wife last year went thru a round of chemo n radiation.
i sat with her on each one.
all went fine. and i hope the same for you mate.

My somewhat sarcastic father used to tell me to never pray a prayer I didn't expect to get heard. He would then end that piece of advice with, "... 'cause ya' know the answer's always gonna' be Yes, No, or Maybe." Wise 'ole coot!

I am Christian and so you probably know good and well what I believe in and where I stand (and to those who wish to criticize -- it's alright, I've got broad shoulders).

No, I don't have a church. Yes, I have lived longer than anyone expected me to. No, I am not as healthy as I wish I were. But you sir, are going to be prayed for whether you've asked it or not! Now take your medicine!

I only know you 'electronically' but I think I can still understand what kind of man you are. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

Well it's Tuesday morning, John, and I guess you're already there getting a good dose of whatever they've got waiting for you.
You'd be crazy not to be a little shaken.
Walkin' in and hearing " the Green, Green Grass" is like a scene from a ba-a-a-ad movie. Made me think of that song's more humourous re-write line: "again I'll smoke the green, green grass of home".

A five hour infusion - I wonder if they'll keep you in bed, or let you roam around pushing the stand.
Don't worry about the voice - you'll still sound better than Tom Waits.

You may not ask for my prayers, but you're sure going to get them. I can understand the fear, although not YOUR fear, that is personal, and I'll never know what it's like for you to be there.

What I believe is that God can heal you, fully, or any portion thereof, depending on what you believe for. While I don't want to turn this into a Christian belief thread, I encourage you to visualize healing, to self motivate yourself from your own internal fortitude to see yourself getting up at the end of each of these sessions and walking away that much better, with the cancer that much further gone.

'Look' inside of yourself, in your imagination, and 'see' the cancer, and 'see' it shrinking and going away after each treatment, because that is what those of us who are praying for you expect to happen.

And John, with your humor, and your sarcasm, and every other defense you've erected to keep yourself sane, a small bit of humility works well, too. Every time you get off the bed, or table, or gurney or whatever, just look upwards a bit and say 'Thank you, God, for all those people who are trying to get me better.'

PS - I'm not particularly a Canuck fan, but being from SK and old enough to be a hockey fan when Jean and Maurice played, my allegiances for bleu, blanc et rouge. I'm enjoying the current situation.

Prayers have been and will continue to go your way (whether you want them or not) John. I just believe this thing called life is much bigger than any of us, or even all of us combined.

John, The 'visualisations' that Gary suggested can be very, very helpful in boosting the body's immune system.....and all the good wishes & prayers from your 'comrades' can only help as well! Your wonderful sense of HUMOUR may be tested .....but I'm sure you will reach the end of the treatments successfully....and move on to .... (maybe)... bigger & better things. John, the good thing about the treatment is that it is available in order to fight off the illness. Had it not been for this process we would be sending our condolences. The study of medicinal arts is really amazing where you can go and actually not just endure but survive and come out on the other side of it.

Do keep us posted as things develop.

a person in Texas could think of this.

From
the county where drunk driving is considered a sport, comes this
true story. Recently a routine police patrol parked outside a bar
in Austin , Texas after last call the officer noticed a man
leaving the bar so apparently intoxicated that he could barely
walk.

The
man stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, with the
officer quietly observing. After what seemed an eternity in which
he tried his keys on five different vehicles, the man managed to
find his car and fall into it.


He
sat there for a few minutes as a number of other patrons left the
bar and drove off.

Finally
he started the car, switched the wipers on and off--it was a fine,
dry summer night--, flicked the blinkers on and off a couple of
times, honked the horn and then switched on the lights.

He
moved the vehicle forward a few inches, reversed a little and then
remained still for a few more minutes
As some more of the other
patrons' vehicles left.

At
last, when his was the only car left in the parking lot, he pulled
out and drove slowly down the road.

The
police officer, having waited patiently all this time, now started
up his patrol car, put on the flashing lights, promptly pulled the
man over and administered a breathalyzer
test.

To
his amazement, the breathalyzer indicated no evidence that the man had consumed any alcohol at all!

Dumbfounded,
the officer said, I'll have to ask you to accompany me to the
police station.

This
breathalyzer equipment must be broken.'

'I
doubt it,' said the truly proud Redneck. 'Tonight I'm the
designated decoy.'

I saw the Docs first who determined that they needed to switch plans and go big time aggressive. So an hour and a half getting steroids, fluids (2 quarts), and some drugs to make you have a leak every 15 minutes. After and hour and a half you wheel your IV stand and pumps to the head. Then back again. Warm blankets every few minutes.

My long lost second cousin who only knew my name was the same but heard the guy was a firefighter turned into a family reunion. With 350,000 people in town, and the cancer centre serving 1.5 million people what are those odds. She said she'd be extra nice to me, cause she had a relative named John Conley. I asked who was her mother and grandmother and when she said the name of my Dad's cousin as her Grandmother I announced my arrival. It was fun catching up, lots of relatives in common including a local TV newscaster she didn't know for sure was her cousin.

After all the stuff they give you IV anti-nausea stuff, pills for that too, and then the chemo for an hour and a flush with 3 cups of fluid in the IV to flush you out.

Then off to the pharmacy for 400 pills, I saw they cost $950 bucks and am thankful for the current drug program I have until the gov't one kicks in at 65.

Then a half hour wait, and about 1.5 hours of radiation and xrays.

Good news: Bone Scan clean, some deterioration of the spine arthritis related. Lots of old broken bones showed up. No cancer.
The latest Ct scan with dye showed no movement beyond the neck.
Therefore they say there is a really good chance I have only the neck problem, and that can be killed.

My wife wandered around the atrium and they had a couple of 60 year old guys playing jazz, one on guitar the other on acoustic double upright bass. Said it sounded pretty good.

So I've a sore throat, and go every day for 7 weeks for radiation, and 2 more large chemo doses.

A schedule with 18 doctor appointments, and the constant reminder to eat all I an now, forget calories get lots, lots of protein, and cram myself full cause nothing is going down in 10 to 15 days.

Left home at 7:30, got home at 5:30 p.m. the hospital is a 10 minute drive from my house.

Thanks for the encouragement. My belief in the the Great Architect and Grand Geomatrician of the Universe gives me a level stance, and helps me walk upright. My life has been dedicated to my fellow man, and helping my brothers.

I ask for naught, I have more than I could ever need, the riches found in friends and family sustain me. I am getting a dozen calls a day, the organizations I support have a single contact person, and they call and organize other visits if you wish. I have 20 people who offer to drive me around, to take me to appointments. It's almost overwhelming.

Anyways one day down, some music to play tonight, and one day at a time.

I did have my wife with me, and I still had the nurses laughing most of the time. The cutest one asked if I wanted a warm blanket and I said sure, then she says I can't play in the olympics due to the steroids which might make me have a few side effects, I winked and said just put that warm blanket over the other one, the side effect is pretty evident, you should go for lunch and let me cool off.....

See, being the boring cautious people who are sitting on a lot of ice, who take no risks with cash, got us somewhere.

I read the Bank of Scotland is laying off hundreds of thousands of people. Wow. Our economy is running too hot. And we did give GM a small loan last year, but they paid it back with interest.

When the crowd sang the national anthem in Montreal at the hockey game last night I thanked my lucky stars that not one person has asked for a nickel, and that I'm getting the royal treatment. I feel so privileged in comparison to the people of Haiti, those in impoverished nations, and I'm sorry, but those in the US who are uninsured. I cried last night at my 'good' fortune when they sang at the top of their lungs, <<terre de nos aieux>> (Land of our ancestors)..no matter what happens in that last game (Glen) that was some awesome hockey. And at the same time our kid from Vancouver Steve Nash did what every canuck has done at one time, 6 stitches, eye swollen totally shut, scoring, shredding, and finishing the game. Ask any Canadian, we'll take a puck and get up, even if the leg is broken.

So much for my 'ethnocentric' rant. I AM CANADIAN!

LOL,want some cheap maple syrup? Poutine? A CC? A quart bottle of 50, still available in downtown Toronto!

BTW, 50 is an old guys ale, lots of flavour!!!! I'm on the wagon, darn. Picked a bad day to quit drinking....
