Living Rhythm and Blues

We are living the rhythm and blues. Sometimes you are in rhythm with the universe (the guitar part), sometimes you have the blues (the tenor sax part), and sometimes you have them both together.

BiaB style - R&B Queen - Soulful R&B Groove
Tempo = 100 BPM

Bass-Ample Bass YinYang
Guitar - Kontakt - Pure Jazz Vibes
Strings - Kontakt - Amadeus Full strings - I modified this track to better for the song
Piano - EZ Keys - Dream Machine - Elektrom - I modified this track to better for the song
Drums - various Steven Slate SSD5 drums

I am playing the guitar and via my keyboard controller the tenor sax. Why the keyboard controller for the sax and not the wind controller. My wind controller decided to die and Akai no longer supports it. I could get it fixed but that would cost as much as or more than what I paid for it. Getting it fixed or buying a new one is currently out of the question.

As always all comments welcomed

Mario...another nice tune...I, like you, use controllers to emulate other instruments (but I can't play a guitar) and so I love to hear how others are using theirs...you always do such a great job...sorry to hear about your wind controller...I was always fascinated by it and your use of it...again great job...Dan

Mario,

Nice smooth laid back sound! Kind of a jazzy blues tune! You are really good at using that controller! No matter what you're working on it always works well! Great song!

Thanks, Torrey

I'm starting with two small nits (but you can feel free to skip them and go straight to the positive part laugh ):

I'm not entirely sure about the Steven Slate SSD5 drums. Sounds a little "GM MIDI". A BIAB Real Drum will probably sound better? Also not sure if the hi-hat should play 16ths throughout the entire arrangement...

The positive part:
Refreshing concept and excellent playing on the tenor sax!

Sorry to hear about your wind controller dying on you... That reminds me of the Yamaha wind controller for the Yamaha DX 11 (if I remember correctly). A friend of mine back then had one, and he produced an awesome sax solo with that wind controller. Of course, back then we didn't have the much more accurate VSTIs we have now, but I actually preferred that somewhat "synthetic" Yamaha sax sound to the real thing!

Thanx Dan. I will miss that wind controller for sure. Maybe I'll get a breath controller.

No om my wind controller died. I am using my keyboard controller on the tenor sax.

Thanx for listening and commenting.

Thanx so much Torrey. The keyboard controller is the one that I have the least amount of ability using. Now I am forced to learn it better.

Thanx Rob for those constructive criticisms. Maybe I picked the sounds from the wrong SSD5 drum kits. The drum track is straight from the BiaB track. I very rarely use RDs as I can not manipulate them like I can using MIDI drum tracks.

Thanx for listening and commenting. I appreciate that.

This is actually a good demonstration of the value of the wind controller...more dynamic, sensitive and "real' in your previous recordings. I think you did a grand job with the keyboard controller but you are a master of the wind one and it showed when you used it.

Cheers

Mario, I like the composition, the way you builded up the song. and then the sax comes in...!
A nice Jazzy Blues I heard.

A little remark I want to make: the volume level is the same throughout the song.
I rather would like some 'expression'(changing in volumes of some instruments). That way your song gains on dynamics. At least, that's what I think.

Nice day,
Hans

Mario,

As always, excellent job using the controller.
Good mix.

I did not care for the drums. They have a rather "odd" sound and they sound "stiff".
(and usually, I like your drum choices...)

Thanx so much Ray for those very kind comments.
I am going to attach my old MIDI foot controller and see if that helps. I also have contacted Patchman's repair shop to either get an estimate on repairs or if it is a gonna see about a new wind controller.

Thanx Hans. You are right there are no dynamics in this song. I really messed up on that and the drums. A mistake that I hope I will not repeat, but with CRS who knows wink

After listening again you and others are right about those drums. Part of the problem was the track BiaB supplied and the other part was my drum choices and drum effects. A lesson learned. Thanx for pointing that out, I appreciate it.

Surely after due consideration you'll opt for another wind controller!
WC! WC! WC! the fans are shouting smile

A musician of your talent (WC or not) can, as you've just shown, work with the available and create a great track.

The sax is cool and as always the technology and your ability amaze us. Nice guitar also.

The juxtaposition of the "rhythm" and the "blues" is a cool and effective concept and one that we enjoyed!

Great job, especially considering you were handicapped by not having your best equipment. Arrrrgghh! Equipment! I sure hope you're able to get it repaired/replaced without it costing you an arm and a leg! Whether you get it fixed or not, keep posting - I like your stuff.

Very cool song Mario. Excellent guitar work. Boy do you have that wind controller dialed in. Two very different cool textures to the song. Well done
