I think Mario’s method is a good way to go after using a number of commercial harmonizers with varying results. One old school trick that I still use is to record a vocal that I can’t reach, either up or down by varying the speed on my old Tascam recorders. You have to be careful to not go too far with it or your end up with the chipmunk sound or worse. I almost always record my main vocal one step down so it will play back one step higher. It keeps me from straining to reach notes at the very top of my range.
