He needs to tune the bass there at the start..... maybe that's how he makes it sound a bit on the rough side.... intentionally play the bass slightly OOT.
Regarding how Lennon played it.... it has worked for decades and no one ever gave it much of a second thought. Could it be "cleaned up" as he suggests.... absolutely but that was part of the charm and success of the Beatles in the first place.
In a cover or tribute band.... yeah, maybe play it like he's suggesting to bring it more into the modern "what we're expecting to hear" realm.
