Hi,
I received a customer email with a problem in his UltraPakAudiophile external hard disk, he said after a virus attack a anti-virus scan and cleaning was done, after that the content of the HD dissapeared, however his Windows OS show the hard disk as near to full with barely 20 GB free within a total size of 465 GB. He said except three (!?!) files, UltraPAK Setup.exe, license and readme txt. there is nothing else in the directory. Also, unless the disc has errors caused by FAT corruption, Windows it should to display a total size of a Terabyte for a old UltraPak Audiophile HD. (now reaching 1.5T with 2010). It seems this user has not done a deep scan check of the disk yet, perhaps him is afraid to make things worse.

Therefore I wanted to ask:
- very early versions of UltraPAK Audiophile came perhaps in hard disks of 500 GB instead 1T?
- some clue about this kinf of HD issue before contact customer support?

thanks by help

I do seem to remember a point when 500GB was the drive used. Not sure how much help that is, because I don't know how much of that drive was occupied originally.

Does BIOS report the same size drive? That would be easy enogh to check.

Is there a recycle bin (deleted folder) that has not been emptied yet and may be able to be restored?
It is possible the files were just marked as deleted.. but not destroyed yet. Check the recycle bin. Be careful as they may be infected files or corrupted files. Tricky area to be playing in.

Otherwise I guess the disk check program of choice would reveal more clues. I recall you being a tech guy, so you probably have favorite programs you rely on to restore and fix a drive (?)

It does look like there is a serious problem from the clues given so far.
What I would try right away; hook the drive to another computer (preferably with another OS) to see if it reports the same thing. I have had drives work fine in XP that showed problems in Vista and Win7, so I copied the contents in XP and salvaged the data. Worth trying.

It is also possible that the virus corrupted a lot of files on that drive and now they are still there, but corrupted and possibly lost.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks Bob,

Yes, I agree full. I concluded the same like you at most, being to engage HD and test it on another PC the first thing to do. Yes, the virus trace on posibly corrupted and deleted files is a dangerous matter. Undesirable issues like this only prove once again the critical importance of HD backup on time!. I will transmit your valuable advices to user. Thanks again Bob.

Hi Carlos,

I'm far from an expert on this, but as near as I can tell from several different forums, there's a good chance the data can be recovered. Patience is key, and try several programs as one may work where others fail. I recommend doing a deep scan with testdisk for starters, as this should be a safe test to run. Here is a link about testdisk.

Hope this helps,

Later,
Jim

I'd be completely happy if I had just one more guitar.

A while back i had one of our office computers get attacked by a virus. When i spent as much time on it as i could, i took it to a shop and the tech there told me that some viruses particualrly the worm variety dig in and even after a deep format leave some sort of residue. He said the end result is that on some occasions the only option is a new hard drive to fix the problems. I do not know how often this is the case or just how true this is, but since i have always backed up important stuff to a second hard drive and used it from there.

My HD from PG is safe and stored in a cabinet in the studio, and the whole program is copied to two other locations one i use daily and one as a secondary backup.

Thats a new one to me about a virus leaving some sort of after effect, unless its a virus that targets the bios or something like that.
First hint of a virus or something wrong in windows I reinstall my acronis backup.

Maybe someone could clear up this point about still having a virus after effects after doing a disk format?

Hi Joe,

Pleased to read that you are using Acronis and I have been recommending the use of it here for many years - in fact I would never be without it after suffering all those time consuming and costly problems before it

The company I do work for deal with all computer problems and they tell me that the only change a hard drive if the hard drive itself is faulty or has surface damaged sectors/areas etc - a re-format wipes clean as does Acronis before it restores it's disk image - however it is possible that if the disk is damaged that it would not wipe completely

A disk check can often reveal disk problems although sometimes it will throw up that it cannot solve the problem - that is a clue to it's condition and there are also applications that will constantly monitor the hard drive

Sounds like a good way to boost sales though

Brian
