Hi folks,

A while back, I changed to Firefox, and since then, I can't visit box.net--I get a 'connection was reset message. I did a little research, and it appears that when you visit box.net, you leave with quite a bit of adware on your computer, even if you don't particularly want adware. lol But since several of the posters here use box, my question is: is there a safe way to use box.net, and if so, how?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I use Box.net and have never had any adware problems.
I never knew there were problems such as you report.
I use Macfee and it seems to keep everything untoward out (I use it because it is recommended and free by my ISP - BT in the UK)

So for me it is safe.

Regards
Michee

Adware is everywhere.
If you want to be safe at most sites run firefox with noscript add on.
You'll get no frills, but never have a script run without Ok'ing it.

Sites I don't trust I'll often go to 'web-sniffer' and look at the code before going there.. or run it past the site advisor at McAfee or badware.org to see if others have reported it. I've run mcafee, norton, avast, etc and every one of them has let things in.
90% of the time it is Antimalwarebytes Antimalware that catches it afterwards. I admit I am online doing research a lot so I probably visit more unfamiliar sites than many people. I've seen concrete contractor sites hijacked by Iranian militants, and all kinds of stuff. I get asked to fix them a lot. Gotta be careful.
I've heard reports of box.net issues too, but have also used it with no problems. I guess it depends on what you are doing there. The more nefarious the download the greater the risks.

To be honest the most active malware right now that I have seen is Craigslist scams trying to steal accounts.. and get malware installed so they can keylog. They are using servers at digg and comcast among others (for redirecting). I know both have been notified. Scrutinize any responses or notices from Craigslist. Look at where links actually go before clicking. There are very authentic looking pages where they get you to log in and accept their redirect... and other methods, including 'helpful tips'. (insert - people like this are why we can't have anything nice meme)

Always scan the download before opening, reduces a lot of risk right there.

Jim

It's a shame things have gotten to a point where these tools are commonly needed.
Glad it worked for you.

The nice thing about 'noscript' is the ability to turn it on/off at will.

I use Firefox with "noscript". Another really nice tool that uses little to no resources is again a Firefox addon done by PCTools. It's called "Browser Defender" There's a thin bar under the normal tool bar that gives the rating of the site. Double click on it and you get more detail. Do a search in google or whatever and each "hit" is rated and you get detail as to the sites safety. Give it a try.
I've been using Linux but am temporarily back to Windows. The one thing I learned from Linux is that you need to take a pro active interest in security like you would in your normal life.

Browser defender shows Box.net as a safe site but like Craigs list you need to be aware of what you're DL as there are many files from many sources. I don't think Box.net filters at all.
No script need to be learned. The first time I used it I did not like it at all. that's cause I didn't know how to use it. Depending on the site you right click on the round S. At the bottom you'll see the basic web site address. This can usually be allowed. Once you allow the basic site things should load fine. If not look at that list again and see what may be able to be allowed. The whole point is some sights can have as may as 20 different scripts running 18 of which you don't need as they run in the background. This is were 3rd party hackers get in and alter this script to something malicious. Go to the PG home page and you'll see that there are two entries:
1. www.PGMusic.com
2. googleappis
Pretty safe to allow both however the page is usable without the googleapis.
Once you allow something at one site it'll be allowed at all sites.

I've just added Browser defender to Firefox. It looks like between it and noscript I should be able to protect myself a little better.

Thanks
Jim

A for instance.
Google-Analytics is used by 75% of web sites. It is of no use what so ever to you and can do you harm indirectly or even directly. I mark it as untrusted and it never shows up again.

I know box.net is blocked by our corporate firewall whereas many other sites are not. Something about that one...

All reports are that it is safe as long as you don't download a file that is malicious from someone else. Sharing files with strangers is always risky.

www.box.net
is a web site for file storing and sharing. You upload your files and then allow someone to download. If I've uploaded files with malicious code and you then download them it's not the fault of box.net. it's the fault of the uploader & downloader.

Hi Jeff,

I don't think so. I think you can upload and share any type of file. Some of the other sites that have been mentioned for sharing music are:

Motagator.net
Kara-Moon.com
soudclick.com
cdbaby.com

I'm sure there are others.

Later,
Jim

Yeah, well siteadvisor issues similar warnings (although more numerous) if you scroll down to the user comments..

always be careful and judge the source before downloading.
