Modern Jazz - Maynard Ferguson - Primal Scream
Rock - Boston

I wore a needle out playing that album. Mother hated hearing it so much she actually threw it (jokingly) and broke it. That same year, my best bud bought me a new one for my birthday. Yes, Mom didn't like my friend.

Okay, for those of you who don't know what I'm referring to ... a phonograph uses a needle to .... ah, the heck with it -- just remember this ... that today's generation (a digital generation) STILL refers to hit music production as an artist who just cut a new ALBUM! I know, who cut's an album anymore?

I did it just last week!
I got an album on a large, black disk. It was too big to fit in my CD-player. So I cut it to size.
Still no sound

Easy.....Yes "Close To The Edge".....

Yet another great one I forgot about. I have wore that one out too. Got the CD now.
Wanna buy the music to it? <grin>
I went out and got the Yes Complete volumes 1&2 of the music. Just had to see how they were doing some of what they were doing.
bonus- includes 6 wives of henry8 music too (wakeman)!

Try to pry it away, just try.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Chris de Burgh's Spanish Train and Other Stories - he's a superb writer

Hi, Ian -

That's a great album; in fact I just listened to it the other day on my way home from work. A lot of people in the US seem to only know Chris DeBurgh for "Lady In Red", but has a great catalog of work. I discovered him when I was stationed with the US Army in Germany back in the '80s.

Of course, remember that originally, an album was literally an album book (much like a photograph album) of many records, since one side of a 78 RPM record could only hold one song.

Okay, this is just bringing back too many memories. I love (and still have on vinyl) Wakeman's Six Wives of Henry VIII as well as "Journey to The Centre Of the Earth" and "The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table". Haven't gotten to the W's yet in converting my vinyl to digital, but I'll get there eventually.

And to add to the list, I would have to say that my all time favorite album is: Chase "Chase" (the first one by Bill Chase), but Maynard Ferguson "Live At Jimmy's" a close second.

Gary,

I guess it's hard to say 'this is my 'favorite' because that depends on my mood, or what I want to hear, etc.

I agree. What made me decide to start this thread was listening to ZZ Top "Tres Hombre" the other day and wondering to myself just how many times I have listened to that album, (ok, CD), over the years. I realized that it was probably many more times than any other album I've ever owned.

My logical conclusion was, "this must be my favorite album!" LOL.

My favorite was Elton John's Yellowbrick road. Bachman turnrt Overdrive Let it Ride, or maybe Elton's Madman across the Water. The Beachboy's Holland, or Sunflower was interesting

Can't argue with the list so far.

Here's some of my faves that aren't as popular:

Don Ross - Passion Sessions
Brian Eno/Daniel Lanois/Roger Eno: Apollo....
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire
The 77's - Sticks and Stones
Adam Again - 10 Songs by Adam Again
Lanterna - Lanterna
Brian Eno - Ambient series (o.k., so that's more than one!)
Yes - 90125 (yes that one - sorry)
The Police - Ghost in the Machine
Peter Himmelman - My Best Friend is a Salamander (this is one of the most fun kids records ever - some very talented musicians are on this thing and the songwriting is superb)

Hard to pick just one and just as hard to pick one from each style i would think..

Being a Brit I naturally enough like English prog rock from the 70's. my picks from that would be

Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic
Van Der Graaf Generator - Still Life

From Jazz it has to be these three:-

Henry Threadgill - Carry the Day
Ornette Coleman - Science Fiction
David Murray Octet - Ming

Im not going away from the original "favourite"album request. For me its "Please please me"by the Beatles because it introduced me to a new kind of music.. music that was exciting and different..the memory of listening to those songs has never left me.I was just starting in a group at the time(I was the singer) and couldnt have joined at a better time.So for me its Please please me.Frankie

3. Keith Jarrett: The Cure

(Obscure early 80's Brit New Wave joke follows)

Don't remember that one - must have been between 'Seventeen Seconds' and 'Faith'

I went downstairs and found the duplicate albums with the notes, so I played some of them so much they are worn out.

1. Rachmaninoff piano Concerto #2 Dm.
2. Well Tempered Clavier (Glen Gould) Bach
3. Bach French suites (Gould)
4. Bach Kantata #50
5. Earth Wind and Fire, a Red Album Cover. LOL. Jeez.
Back to a whole list of classical stuff, mostly baroque.

The First Album I have 15 of....plus the original score...and the symphonies..all of Rachmaninoff symphonies with scores.

Sorry. No Glen Campbell.

George Lewis the Climax sessions was the first New Orleans record that set me on my musical career, i went out the next day and brought a Clarinet and still has the same affect when i listen to it 55 years later
