FWIW. Which is probably nuthin'. As with all of us, there's so many. So much music, so little time, and only one life to appreciate it in.

Here's mine. I've limited myself to recordings I actually own.

1. The Beatles entire opus, which I colloectively adore too much to distinguish one from the other.

2. Hendrix, same terms.

3. Cream, as above. (can't speak highly enough of the 2005 Albert Hall reunion DVD).

4. Yessongs.

5. Say, the first half dozen Steely Dan albums.

6. Chicago's 1 ("Chicago Transit Authority", rather than 1 per se), 2, and 3.

7. Rolling Stones mid life period work; Beggars Banquet, Sticky Fingers, Exile, Some Girls.

8. Deep Purple's "Machine Head". See also their live classic "Made In Japan".

9. Stevie Ray Vaughan's last studio album, "In Step". I would nominate his atmospheric "Riviera Paradise" as just about the most sublime piece of guitar work I possess in recorded form. I can still remember hearing it for the first time on the car radio driving home from church one Sunday night in 1989. I went out and bought the album the next day. I was just exploring my way through his recordings when he passed away some months later.

10. Here's a suprise to end the list. At no. 10, it's the Australian Hillsong church's 1st CD release, "The Power Of Your Love", from 1989. Nearly all songs penned by Geoff Bullock. For me, an inspirational classic I still play.

And another thing while I'm indulging myself here. I remain a vinyl lover, and although I have stacks of CD's/DVD's etc. I can't quite understand why people have been so keen to discard their once treasured records and go the CD route. For ~$1000 or even somewhat less you can have a lifetime turntable/arm/cartridge and stylus combo that continues to give you great sound and the joy of your precious records, with all their memories, cover art, and yes, some snap, crackle and pop. (Well okay, the stylus won't last a lifetime. I got carried away there). I don't begrudge them or the stylus the full cleaning ceremony before playing each side, always have, and consequently they sound just about as good as new. I still have the 1st record I ever bought at 16 y.o. and it plays great. I currently use a Technics SL1200 Mk. 2 turntable with a Shure M97X phono cartridge. No complaints with that combo, which will set you back about 3 electricity bills here.

I note with interest how mesmerised Gen Y's and Gen i's are by vinyl records, having been raised by DJ's on electronic and dance stuff cross pollinated by scratching and mixing, sped up and down records. I've had one or two sub 30 y.o. friends or family in my studio who see the turntable, go "you've got a record player!" in awed tones and immediately want to play something on it, then can't believe it sounds as clear and dynamic as the CD player.

I could go on and start talking about how they are similarly blown away by showing slides in a slide projector but that's another story...

One of my favorite Maynard albums is "Message From Newport". Later, Ray

I am truly surprised by the number of Maynard Ferguson nominations.
I have many many of his recordings, including everything nominated so far (plus quite a few), but am still surprised.

I guess that says a lot for the guy.. I should dig them all out and start digitizing. Maybe they are worth more than I think.

Forgot to add another jazz title. in fact this was the one started me on a jazz obsession thats showing no signs of abating.

Keith Jarrett Quartet - Survivor's Suite.

If you only buy one ECM album or even one Jarrett album make sure it's this one .. it could change your life too!

Very nice.
Dark Side of the Moon is getting its usual tally, as is Sgt Pepper ..
Surprised to see another vote for Straphangin' !

Carlos, you have Heavy Weather, have you heard 8:30 yet? I think the live performance of those songs shows performance beyond the original studio cuts. Wayne Shorter has more freedom, Jacos chops are on display througout, and Zawinal is amazing (as usual).

Along those lines, I am also surprised how much love for Maynard there is here. I thought I was a rarity. I have every album he did for decades, and think the best version of Birdland is his .. partly do to the horns and partly due to Gadds drumming <grin> I saw him live many many times, met him and knew people that played with him, etc.
His live shows were what kept me coming back.

YesSongs is another that surprises me, I really enjoy Yes and think Close to the Edge was a milestone.

Maynard's live shows were awesome, especially when he would come out in the audience an play right there. I remember him playing Pagliacci about 5 feet from where I was sitting.

I can remember him next to me playing many times. I saw him dozens of times. (perk being in a music business family)
Pagliacci was a strong pice live, as was Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, Conquistador, Give It One, Sheherazade and many more. Hearing Primal Scream live was very cool back in the day also. Herbie Hancock's CHameleon..

I did not see him early enough to see Chase with him, but I have seen many many fine players rise through the ranks with him. So many it astounds me. Not just trumpet players but every other instrument too. I've seen Steve Gadd on drums with him, too many trumpet players to start listing, Mark Colby on sax, Bobby Militello on sax/flute, Hang loose with Bruce, Gordon Johnson on bass, Alan (the amazing) Zavod on keys, just so many guys with so much talent rose through his ranks.. the shows were awesome just because of the band, then when you throw Maynard on top.. it was always a night to remember. I remember exposing a lot of people to his shows and never got a complaint.

Jean Luc Ponty was like that too, always a great band. Same with Tom Scott... ahh the good old days.
