Hi Folks,

I have been editing and sequencing on a Motif ES 7 for some time now but I have decided to try out editing my notes etc of my sequences in Power Tracks Piano roll. I am having a hard time understanding it. Have no idea how to start, and what to do. I read up the manualand helps but grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Maybe it is just me but my question is, are there any video tutorials for Biab or power tracks that can break down this "Piano Roll" vibe for me in a simple way???

Hi, Jacobins -

I'm at work and can't check it out right now, but if no one else responds, I'll see if I can put some info together for you this evening to help you out. Which version of PowerTracks are you using? Also, make sure you have the most current updates for the version you have.

By the way, my wife is from Columbus, GA, and my niece is getting ready to graduate from Hardaway High School there.

Yow John,

Good to hear from you. We live right there by the RIVER WALK in the HISTORIC DISTRICT in UPTOWN, COLUMBUS. What an amazing area...very nice, quiet............great for music creativity. Every Wednesday evening in UPTOWN, COLUMBUS, there are "live" giggs at a resturant/ bar/ club area called "THE LOFT." You must come check it out some time. At times, when I need a moment of inspiration, I take my acoustic guitar and go sit on a bench on the River Walk and "HEY PRESTO.......................all of a sudden, I can come up with a new original song..........lol !!! Great to know about your Columbus, GA, connection. I have a music teacher friend of mine who teaches there at Hardaway High School. She has a Masters in Music Education and plays bass at my church. I am thrilled to read your reply.

I am a Yamaha Motif ES fanatic and have been using my Motif to sequence and edit for 3 years now. I use Power Track off and on but a friend advised me to start using Power Tracks (piano roll feature) via Midi hooked up to my Motif thru my Lexicon Omega interface to edit. I was told that life will be much easier editing my notes and even sequencing via my software instead of Hardware. I have the latest Power Tracks 2010 version 4. I am a newbie to this method. I also have band in a box 2008 megapak which is pretty cool. I checked out tutorial # 15 under band in a box helps menu and read up on the piano roll vibe but................I cannot understand it. I really need a simple tutorial on this Piano roll and or if any one can break this down for me, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks so much for your reply and your help. I will be looking forward to you hitting me back on here soon re the piano roll vibe.....as soon as you can. Any time you are in columbus, holla at me. Herbiemusic@yahoo.com is my regular email address. Contact me on here for my Tel #.

Thanks much. God bless.

First thing about editing your song is that you HAVE to move the song to your computer. So, if you're using the on-board sequencer in the Motif, save it as a .mid file, and transfer it to the computer.

Once it's in the computer, open it with PowerTracks Pro Audio.

I don't have PTPA installed on my computer any more, but RealBand will work in the same way.

Click on a track that you want to edit, and then click the Piano Roll icon.

Another window will open. In this window, on the left side, will be a keyboard. As you scroll to the right, you will see bars at various heights and various lengths. These are your notes. Press Play.

You'll notice that as the time cursor moves to the right that each of the bars will turn a color. That indicates which note is playing. You can put your mouse cursor in the middle of the note, and then click. That allows you to drag the note up and down the keyboard, until you get where you want to go. Clicking on the right side of the note will bring you a single ended arrow and this allows you to lengthen or shorten the note. Clicking on the left side of the note allows you to move the entire note forward and backward in time.

Down below are a bunch of vertical lines, and depending on what you have selected in the Controller menu, labeled View/Edit (i.e., Velocity) these are the Common Controller values, which allow you to set Velocity, Expression, Modulation, etc.

That's the quick and dirty introduction to the Piano Roll editing window. In my opinion, much faster and easier, and more visual than using the notation window for editing.

However, the key is that you have to move the song file to the computer, and open it with PowerTracks.

In fact, you should be doing all of your recording in PowerTracks and not using the on-board sequencer at all.

Gary

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Hi Mr John,

Good to be in touch with ya. Thanks in advance for your help. I understand how work can be and so whenever you're ready, that would be fine. I'll wait on you. By the way, as you know, UPTOWN Columbus is a gigging area but what I find is that there are so many guitar players and drummers but not many keyboard players down yonder so that's where I think I can maybe fit in for a regular gigg. I have been going down there and sort of keeping my eyes and ears open. The style of music I hear down there is mainly country, blues, rock and some top 40 stuff.

I am into all kinds of music and I love Jazz. But anyways, I guess I'll see how it goes down there................lol.

Let's stay in touch, Mr John.

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
