According to the UN High Commission for Human Rights, the “Caesar with no shirt” (thank you for this name jannesan) and his naked aggression has resulted in 10,403 Ukraine civilian casualties between February 24, 2022 and June 21, 2022. During this period, 4,634 people were killed, including 1,780 men, 1,194 women, 131 girls, 148 boys, as well as 41 children and another 1,340 adults whose sex is unknown. According to Wikipedia, Around 7.1 million refugees fleeing Ukraine have been recorded across Europe, while an estimated 8 million people had been displaced within the country by 3 May. InterpretationThis is a ballad of solidarity. The into begins with destruction and pain; ominous synth and low-register brass The verses offer a glimpse of hope and resistance; guitar pad The chorus and bridge reminds us that the Russian bear is never too far away; ominous synth The outro speaks to resilience, resistance and final victory; uplifting synth and trumpets My goal is that someone from Ukraine who somehow may listen to this, would understand this message of empathy, hope and solidarity despite cultural and spoken language differences. Hi Bass Thumper
Just like you, I feel close to the Ukrainians and their misfortune. Your music translates well the words you wrote. It's very gripping music. Well done.

A lot to take in here musically. I think most of it worked well for me. There was a noise at 1:55 and elsewhere that seemed to not fit to my ears, but it was short and hardly worth mentioning. Overall, I think you did a fine job, it's amazing what BIAB can do in the hands of mere musical mortals such as you and me.

I think the "noise" you are hearing is my intentional attempt at producing [Russian] bear growls. These happen around 1:50, 1:57, 2:41, 2:49, and 3:42. These are broadly described in the Interpretation at the top of this thread. Headphones or earbuds may make this more clear. I'm curious what others hear at these time points. Should I have boosted the volume to make them more clear?

It's sad but necessary that we have to make these songs of solidarity, and I'm glad that your music speaks for freedom, independence and right to protest. Very good change of moods from dark to light. Beautiful melody. Really liked the orchestration and the cello.

Hopefully freedom loving people around the world will help to shorten the length of this arc as much as possible so that Ukraine can purse it's right to happiness and freedom.

Generally a pleasant bit of music.
The "growls" don't work for me - they sound too much like a mistake rather that intentional.
I don't know that someone will necessarily understand the song without reading the context. As Ukraine is currently engaged in a war, it seems odd to represent the two forces with a mellow guitar-backed melody vs. some ominous - but distant - synths.
If this were meant to represent a prelude to a conflict, I think it would work. But that's just me.
I find the lead synth "pops" quite a bit, and doesn't sit well in the mix. Add a wide stereo separation to that, and towards the end got a bit... well, irritating to my ears.
Still, a nice bit of music.

OK, the growls don't work for everyone, I get it, thanks for the feedback. I do know that somebody could make this work. My music/mixing skills obviously are not up to the task. Sorry . . .

TuneMonger, David and others, I'm curious about your thoughts regarding a real grizzly bear growl vs the simulated representation of one that we used. And whether you think one would work better than the other. It never occurred to us to use a real growl in our song. Here is a 53 second comparison between the two. Real vs Simulated Grizzly Bear Growl I'm thinking that the simulated representation works better musically but perhaps we used too much artistic liberty?

At first I thought the real bear growl was the perfect answer. But listening to the sample, I'm not so sure. I think you're right, somebody could make this work, and that somebody is probably someone who does a lot of sound design work who could shape a real bear growl to sound good in your musical piece. The sample you put on SC seems too brief for me. I would think the growl should be more sustained. I found quite a few on youtube that might get you closer. The third growl on this vid I liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iqOk2L3N5YGood luck, I hope you get the result you're looking for. TM

Oh, I'm with ya on this one, BT. A really good composition. Well played and produced. Yes, the growl is a bit distracting. I like your intention with it, and the symbolism. Not sure why, but when I tried playing the samples, there was no sound. Either way, I like TuneMonger's suggestion for a solution. Now, enough about the Russian bears, and back to the song. I really like how you did it.

You've capture musically what you articulated in you post.

Not sure why, but when I tried playing the samples, there was no sound. This is really interesting. When you play the sample "there was no sound". And yet I and others seem to hear it fine. I'm wondering if this is an imagination/symbolism thing. I realize that the synth doesn't really sound like a true bear. Rather it is intended to evoke foreboding and doom. Or I'm wondering if this is more of a sonic thing involving the frequency response of the speakers, headphones or earbuds you are using ? Perplexing . . . some seem to hear it fine while others do not.

Bass Thumper this is your best to date even though I did not care for the growls.
Super chord progression and instrumentation.
A great mix also.
Two thumbs up

Hey this sounds really cool! Very touching and beautiful! Thanks David, you and some others apparently get what we're trying to communicate but others don't which is fascinating to me. I came across a paragraph in my "newbies book" that might explain some of what's going on. "You hear sounds because air vibrates against your eardrums, causing them to vibrate. These vibrations are then analyzed by your brain and registered as music, traffic, birds singing - whatever. Because sound waves are picked up by each unique eardrum and dissected by each unique brain, chances are that nobody hears the same sound exactly the same as anybody else."A little more backstory on this song: I am actually not that pleased with it myself; but not because of the growls. Some disagree, but I think the growls work. I think you get that I'm not trying to produce sound-effects for a documentary on grizzly bears. If there is a term for symbolically representing a sound with another sound I don't know what it is. Sound symbolism?? Creative embellishment?? Anyway, what I don't like about it is to my eardrums and brain, there are places that feel out of time, forced or strained, as opposed to smooth and free flowing. It's either my bass playing or Marty's piano work because BiaB I'm sure is consistent. But the funny thing (again) is that Marty doesn't hear this out-of-timeness. He thinks it's rock-steady and smooth Go figure.

Appreciate the kind words Mario. Regarding the growls, I wonder if there is a sonic equivalent to this illusion. An Illusion? PS> I see turquoise and gold PPS> I think you mean "If" in your new signature.

For us you accomplished your goal. The sporadic interruptions of the lighter and lovely music by the dark and ominous undertones made us think of how one can be going about your day happily and suddenly something reminds you of the ever present problem that is always just over there…waiting. And surely every citizen of Ukraine experiences this all too frequently.
Well done!

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
