At first I thought the real bear growl was the perfect answer. But listening to the sample, I'm not so sure. I think you're right, somebody could make this work, and that somebody is probably someone who does a lot of sound design work who could shape a real bear growl to sound good in your musical piece. The sample you put on SC seems too brief for me. I would think the growl should be more sustained. I found quite a few on youtube that might get you closer. The third growl on this vid I liked:
