Yes, they help a lot...pre BIAB I used a drum machine to set the tempo & "count in" like a printed to tape metronome.
Another thing that can help collaboration is common audio format...beyond the obvious I've found that, on occasion, an MP3 file may be shorter or longer than a .wav and the very small difference puts everything off. Having visual audio cue helps alleviate that.
Having projects set up with the same BPM is clearly important...I collaborated with a fellow who didn't set Reaper to the requires tempo, he imported tracks added his own and mixed them...the results were different on an whole lot of levels: shorter, faster, more "exciting" etc BUT I couldn't use his parts in mine without very accurate time stretching etc...VERY frustrating.
